Otolaryngology or ENT (ear, nose and throat) is the branch of medicine that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose, throat, and head and neck disorders.
Laryngitis is an inflammation of the larynx. It causes hoarse voice or the complete loss of the voice because of irritation to the vocal cords. Dysphonia is the medical term for a vocal disorder, of which laryngitis is one cause.
Laryngitis is categorized as acute if it lasts less than a few days. Otherwise it is categorized as chronic, and may last over 3 weeks.
Rhinitis commonly known as a stuffy nose, is the medical term describing irritation and inflammation of some internal areas of the nose. The primary symptom of rhinitis is nasal
dripping. It is caused by chronic or acute inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose due to viruses, bacteria or irritants.
Otitis externa is an inflammation of the outer ear and ear canal. Along with otitis media, external otitis is one of the two human conditions commonly called ‘earache’. The inflammation can be secondary to dermatitis (eczema) only, with no microbial infection, or it can be caused by active bacterial or fungal infection. The ear canal skin swells and may become painful.
Otitis interna is an inflammation of the inner ear and is usually considered synonymous with labyrinthitis.
Labyrinthitis is an inflammation of the inner ear that typically results in severe vertigo lasting for one or more days. Its cause is from a viral inflammation of the vestibular labyrinth. Patients usually present with the sudden onset of severe vertigo, nausea, and vomiting. A bacterial infection of the middle ear can spread to the inner ear and cause this disease. In this situation antibiotic treatmentmay be helpful.
Otitis media is inflammation of the middle ear, or middle ear infection. Otitis media is most commonly caused by infection with viral, bacterial, or fungal pathogens.
Hearing impairment or Deafness refers to conditions in which individuals are fully or partially unable to detect or perceive at least some frequencies of sound which can typically be heard by other people.
