Text 3. One investigator's life

Hello. My name is James Black. I am an investigator of Global Investigations Agency. I think you know, what my job is look like. You must have seen many films about detectives, investigators and others who try to make this world better, haven't you? So, this is my everyday job: to find dismissed people, to catch criminal, etc. Do you think that really exciting and interesting job? At first, I thought so too. But later, when I have been facing so many crimes, kidnapping, abductions, thefts and burglaries every day, I tired from it.

Here are some pages from my work diary. I use it to right what I have done for last week, month, year. Sometimes I enjoy reading it. That's make me proud of myself and prove that people need me and my job, I'm useful for society I live in. And sometimes I enjoy remember funny stories, that I have faced.

A life insurance claim was sent by a lady who said that her husband dead during his holiday in Spain. He just went for a walk and didn't return. This looked suspicious. The body couldn't disappear without leaving a trace! After the investigation we where able to find presumed dead man alive! The claim for $350, 000 was dropped and the husband is now serving 2 years in prison. Next time he will think of legal way to get money.

A computer company had lost $85, 000 in computer theft. They supposed that the thieves are international professional or something like that. If only you have seen their faces, when infra-red cameras showed that their own security has been committing the thefts.

A young man had changed his name to claim on the death of his non-existent brother. The policy didn't believe him and "alarm bells began to ring" against the claim. They turned to our help. The matter was investigated and it was discovered that the man had never existed and this young man, who changed his name was in serious debt.

One man faked a Ј5, 300 burglary claim by hiding hi-fi and video equipment in his attic. He claimed that the thieves got into the house through the back door but he had in fact imagine the story because he was heavily in debt.

As you see, sometimes the affair, I'm investigating maybe funny, some of them are difficult, interesting. Nevertheless I like my job and won't exchange it for anything else. [25]

Text 4. Jailing of truants' mother sends the right Message'

A Landmark decision by magistrates to send a mother to prison for allowing her children to play truant was welcomed by the Government.

Patricia Amos, from Banbury in Oxfordshire, was sentences to 60 days' imprisonment for failing to ensure that her daughters Emma, 15, and Jackie, 13, attended the local comprehensive regularly.

Ms Amos claimed that the sentence was unduly harsh, but Estelle Morris, the Education Secretary, said that it sent the right message to other parents who might tempted to condone absences.

Ms Amos, 43, a single mother who has five children by three different fathers, was jailed for allowing her daughter to stay away from school for extended periods. Her eldest daughter, Kerry Cowman, 25, says:

- My mother has pleaded to be released from Holloway prison, in North London. She told us she hated it there and just wanted to come home. Now I will care for the girls, as well as my own three children, until our mother is released. My sisters have told me that they started missing school to comfort mother after the death of her own mother who lived with them.

Jackie says:

- When my Nan died, I didn't want to leave my mother alone. It wasn't her fault I missed school.

Emma adds:

- It wasn't right my Mum has been punished for something I did.

Ms Cowman said that it was a harsh lesson for the girls to learn:

- There must be another way of teaching kids a lesson without locking their mother up.

Home Office statistics show, that 20% of criminal damage, 25% of burglaries, 30%of car thefts and 40% of street crime is carried out by children aged between 10 and 16 who have skipped school lessons. The Government education watchdog, has estimated that five million school days are lost each year to the problem of truancy. [25]
