  9. The Problem of pollution in Ukraine

Every year man extracts more than 100 milliard tons of natural resources from the soil but uses only 1,5–2 per cent of them. The rest of the natural resources are solid wastes. These wastes need vast areas to be stored in.

Man also produces much rubbish and the main part of it is buried. The greatest pollutant of soil is rubbish. When we throw something away it goes in a garbage can. Once a week the garbage truck comes and the can is emptied. Almost all garbage is taken to a garbage dump or landfill where the truck empties it into the ground. After the truck leaves a big tractor comes along and pushes dirt on the top of the garbage. So most of our garbage is just buried. For years we have been throwing litter away and do not think about it. Now we are making so much garbage that there are not enough places to bury it all. So people start thinking of rubbish problem and learning facts.

In Britain every family yearly throws out 1 ton of rubbish; 90 per cent of this rubbish goes into landfill cities; 80 per cent of it burns; and only
2 per cent of rubbish is recycled.

The USA produces 160 million ton of rubbish per year. In 2010 each person threw away about 1,8 kg of trash daily. Put it all together and you’d fill 45,000 trash trucks every day! And only 10 per cent of this trash is recycled. Packaging makes about one third of all trash. Some companies have begun to use less packaging but they can not refuse complete using it, so they have to recycle it. Britain recycles 16 per cent of glass bottles,
5 per cent of aluminum cans (Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Fanta, etc.), 26 % of all waste paper. Holland recycles 62 per cent of bottles, 57 per cent of waste paper. Canada recycles 655 of all cans, 16 hundred million of plastic bottles weighting 40,000 tons were recycled in Europe in 2012 as a result of a scheme coordinated by the Association of European Plastic Manufacturers (AEPM).

Everything in our life is interdependent: we pollute the soil and it does not give us harvests, we bury garbage and ruin the fauna. So our cities become less green and the air – less clean…
