The following terms have been defined using a form of the term itself. Rewrite each definition without repeating the term being defined. Make sure the meaning of the word is clear.

2. loyalty: the quality or state of being loyal.
3. education: the action or process of being educated.
4. happiness: the state of being happy.
5. creativity: the quality of being creative.
6. friendship: the state of being friends.
7. independence: the quality or state of being independent.
8. leadership: the quality of a leader.
Points to Remember for Organization:
• Each body paragraph in your essay should illustrate an aspect of your
definition that you stated in your thesis.
• Support each aspect with clear examples. (Look back at the student essay.)
• The conclusion should summarize your personal definition and give a final
comment on the term.

1. Use one of the concepts you researched to write a definition essay using three or four examples.
2. Write a definition essay on the concept of friendship. Use three or four ways to
illustrate your definition.
3. Write a definition essay on alcoholism.
4. Write a definition essay on respect, providing illustrations.

Work alone, with a partner, or in a group.
1. Brainstorm the topic. Write dow any mental associations you make with the
word to be defined.
2. Brainstorm for examples that can illustrate the word.
3. Work on a thesis statement.
