►Metaphor

A metaphor expresses a comparison more indirectly without using "like" or "as." A word or phrase is used in the comparison suggesting the strong like­ness between them.

Examples:

The confrontation between the government and the Camorra had nearly

reached the level of a civil war. (The confrontation is compared to a civil

war.)

They were the Manson family of their day. (The murderous activity of the

Thugs is being compared to the horrible murders committed by the Manson

family in our times.)

 

Exercise 2

Work with a partner or a group. Explain the comparisons being made Ti the following metaphors.

1. The Thugs were wolves in sheep's clothing.
