The Foodservice Industry

 

There are millions of people who don’t eat at home every day. The restaurant and catering business has to feed this huge number of people-office and factory employees, schoolchildren, military personnel, travellers and people out to have a good time. Because there are so many people to feed, the foodservice industry is very important and is one of the largest industries in the world. Those who don’t eat at home spend vast sums of money in eating places.

 

Restaurants offer their service and product at a fixed location. For example, their service can be found in most hotels which provide special meals for people, meetings, weddings or banquets. The catering business is a mobile one, providing foodservice for special occasions or for special places where meals are usually not prepared. Unlike a restaurant, a catering service does not need to operate at a fixed location. Sometimes the food is prepared in one place and served in another. For example, meals served by airlines. Food prepared in the kitchen is delivered to the airplanes and simply heated there.

 

The foodservice industry employs millions of people throughout the world, particularly in tourist areas, and plays a principle part in the regional economy.

 

There is a great tendency to buy fast food. However the fast food diet, popular for both its convenience and low cost, contains a lot of fat and carbohydrates.
