Text

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK) occupies most of the territory of the British Isles. The UK consists of four main parts which are: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Their capitals are: London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

The UK is situated off the west coast of Europe between the Atlantic Ocean on the northwest and the North Sea on the east. The state is separated from the European continent by the English Channel (or La Manche) and the Strait of Dover (or Pas de Calais).

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official name of the state which is sometimes called Great Britain or Britain (after its major isle), England (after its major historic part) or the British Isles. The British Isles are composed of more than six thousand islands, large and small. The two main and large islands are: Great Britain (in which areEngland, Wales and Scotland) to the east and Ireland (in which are Northern Ireland and the independent Irish Republic, or Eire) to the west. They are separated by the Irish Sea, North Channel, St George's Channel and Celtic Sea. The total area of the British Isles is 322,246 sq. km, while that of the UK is 244,820 sq. km. The UK is one of the world’s smaller countries (it is half as large as France or Spain).

The Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the political union of the kingdoms of England and Scotland with the Act of Union 1707. In 1801, under a new Act of Union, this kingdom merged with the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. After the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921) most of Ireland seceded from the Union. The state then got the name the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Great Britain does not include the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. They are not part of the United Kingdom, but are Crown Dependencies. It means they are constitutionally tied to the Monarch (King or Queen), with their own legislative and taxation systems; though the islands are treated as part of the state for many reasons including nationality.

The UK has fourteen overseas territories; all of them are remnants of the British Empire. In 1922 it encompassed almost a quarter of the world's land surface and was the largest empire in history.

The population of the United Kingdom is nearly 63 million people.

The flag of the United Kingdom, known as the Union Jack, is made up of three crosses. The upright red cross is the cross of St. George, the patron saint of England. The white diagonal cross is the cross of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. The red diagonal cross is the cross of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.
