AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES

 

At the 101st International Olympic Committee Session held in Monaco on 21-24 September 1993, the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus was officially recognized and became a full member of the Olympic Movement

Belarus received the right to represent its best athletes at all the sports events held under the IOC patronage, including the most popular competitions in the world – Olympic Games.

For the first time athletes of Belarus participated as an independent team in the XVII Olympic Winter Games 1994 in Lillehammer (Norway). The NOC of Belarus sent 33 athletes competing in 7 sports. In Lillehammer, Belarusian athletes won first Olympic medals for Belarus as an independent state. Speed-skater Igor Zhelezovsky won silver medal in 1000 m. Biathlete Svetlana Paramygina also became a silver medallist in the 7,5 km individual race.

In 1996 at the XXVI Olympiad in Atlanta, USA, Belarus was represented by 144 athletes in 21 sports. 15 medals were won: 1 gold 6 silver and 8 bronze ones. Ekaterina Khodotovich (after marriage, Karsten) became the first Olympic champion from Belarus. She won a gold medal in rowing. Silver medallists at the Olympiad in Atlanta: Alexey Medvedev (freestyle wrestling), Alexander Pavlov and Sergei Lishtvan (Greco-Roman wrestling), Vladimir Dubrovshchik (discus), Natalia Sazanovich (heptathlon) and Igor Basinsky (shooting). Bronze medal holders: Valery Tsilent (Greco-Roman wrestling) Vitaly Shcherbo – 4 medals (artistic gymnastics: all-around individual vault parallel bars, horizontal bar), Vasily Kaptyukh (athletics, discus), Natalia Lavrinenko, Alexandra Pankina, Natalia Volchek, Tamara Davydenko, Valentina Scrabatun, Elena Mikulich, Natalia Stasuyk, Marina Znak, Yaroslava Pavlovich (rowing, eights).

In Atlanta, Belarus took the 37th place in the rank by gold and the 23rd place in the rank by total.

In February 1998, at the XVIII Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, 59 athletes of the Belarusian national team competed in nine sports. 2 bronze medals were won by Alexei Aidarov in biathlon, 20 km individual, and Dmitri Dashinsky in freestyle. For the first time the national ice hockey team was among the top eight teams at the Olympic Games, competed in quarterfinal and took the 5th place after 7 matches (France – 4:0, Germany – 8:2, Japan – 2:2, Canada – 0:5, USA – 2:5, Sweden – 2:5, Russia – 1:4).

Among 72 participating countries, the Belarusian team took the 20th place.

In 2000, at the XXVII Olympiad in Sydney, Australia, Belarus was represented by 134 athletes in 21 sports. The team won 17 medals: 3 gold, 3 silver and 11 bronze ones.

Gold medals were won by Ekaterina Karsten (rowing), Ellina Zvereva (athletics, discus) and Yanina Korolchik (athletics, shot put).

Silver medallists: Igor Basinsky (shooting), Yulia Raskina (rhythmic gymnastics), Tatsiana Ananko, Tatsiana Belan, Anna Glazkova, Irina Ilienkova, Maria Lazuk, Olga Puzhevich (rhythmic gymnastics, group competitions).

Bronze medallists: Dmitri Debelka (Greco-Roman wrestling), Anatoly Laryukov (judo), Igor Astapkovich (hammer), Irina Yatchenko (athletics, discus), Natalia Sazanovich (heptathlon), Pavel Dovgal (modern pentathlon), Sergei Martynov, Lolita Evglevskaya, Igor Basinsky (all – shooting), Gennady Oleshchuk, Sergei Lavrenov (weightlifting). The Olympiad in Sydney was successful for the Belarusian team: the 23rd place in the rank by gold and the 15th place in the rank by total.

At the XIX Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City in 2002, Belarus was represented by 64 athletes in 9 sports. The only medal – a bronze one – was won by Alexei Grichin, World Champion in freestyle.

The national ice-hockey team made a sensation – in the final round it competed for Olympic medals with the teams from the USA, Canada, Russia, and took the 4th place.

At the 2002 Olympics Belarus finished 23rd among 77 participating countries, according to the rank by total.

In 2004 at the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens, 151 athletes competed in 23 sports.

Yulia Nesterenko's victory in 100m (athletics) became a sensation! Another gold medal was won by Igor Makarov (judo).

Silver medal holders: Ekaterina Karsten (rowing), Anna Batyushko and Andrey Rybakov (weightlifting), Viktor Zuev and Magomed Aripgajiev (boxing), Ivan Tikhon (athletics, hammer).

Bronze medallists: Viacheslav Makarenko (Greco-Roman wrestling), Natalia Tsilinskaya (cycling, track, time trial), Yulia Bichik and Natalia Gelakh (rowing), Irina Yatchenko (athletics, discus), Sergei Martynov (shooting), Tatsiana Stukalova (weight-lifting), Roman Petrushenko and Vadim Makhnev (kayak).

The team won 15 medals (2 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze ones) and took the 26th place in the rank by gold and the 18th place in the rank by total. In Athens, 201 countries were represented.

Since 1994 (when Belarus was first represented by its team), 56 Belarusian athletes have become Olympic champions and prize-holders and won 52 medals (6 gold 17 silver and 29 bronze ones) in 16 sports.
