There are many monuments in Cheboksary. They are dedicated not only to famous Russian people, but also to our famous fellow-countrymen. It's better to start with V. I. Chapayev, because his name is well-known not only in Chuvashia. He was a legendary hero of the Civil War. He perished at the age of 32 in the Ural River. In 1960 a monument to Chapayev was erected in Cheboksary, his homeland. Before it the monument had been in Moscow and only with the help of Chapayev's daughter it was transferred to Cheboksary. At first the monument designed by the sculptor Balandin and the architect Morozov was made of ferroconcrete and gypsum. Time and the weather told on the monument and it was decided to cast it of bronze.

In 1985 the gypsum sculpture was replaced by a bronze one. It was executed by Balandin. The monument is 10metres high. The pedestal is 16metres. On the front side of the pedestal you can see bas-reliefs depicting the most significant events of the Civil War.

The monument is situated in the public gardens, created to commemorate our national hero. It is named after him. There you can also see the Chapayev museum. It has a collection of documents, photographs and other exhibits, illustrating the life and military activity of the Civil War Hero V. I. Chapayev.

Next to the museum you will see the Chapayev Home Museum. It is a peasant's log hut, where Chapayev was born and spent his childhood. The house has become a part of the memorial complex.

In our town there are many places named after V. I. Chapayev. They are Chapayev settlement, the Plant named after Chapayev, the Chapayev Public Gardens and Chapayev Street.

Not far from the Chapayev Public Gardens you can see one more memorial complex, dedicated to our Chuvash spaceman Nikolayev. He was the third spaceman after Y. Gagarin. Now at the intersection of Lenin Avenue and Nikolayev Street you can see Nikolayev's bust on the granite wall. In summer a small spring can be also seen there. It reminds us of Nikolayev's birthplace. The name of his native village Shorshely means clean springs.

Going down Lenin Avenue we will see a monument to I. Y. Yakovlev. It is located in the centre of the public gardens, named after him. We can't help mentioning his name, because his role in the Chuvash culture is really enormous. The national written language was created by him on the basis of the Russian alphabet in the 19th century. He also wrote the first ABC book for Chuvash schools. Thanks to him the Chuvash people today have an opportunity to read and write in their native Chuvash language. Our pedagogical university is named after him.

The monument is by Moscow sculptors D. Naroditsky and G. Sayevich. On the front wall of the pedestal we read his prophetic words: “Trust in Russia, love it, and it will become your mother”.

If we continue our walk down the main street of Cheboksary, one more public garden will be on our way. In it you will see a monument to Mikhail Sespel, the Chuvash poet. He created a new Chuvash poetic school and is considered to be the founder of the Chuvash poetry.

One more famous poet and prose-writer in Chuvashia was Konstantin Ivanov. There is a monument to him, situated in the public gardens, named after him. It is a bronze bust created in 1952 by the first Chuvash sculptor I. Kudryavtsev. K. Ivanov is the Chuvash national poet and the founder of the Chuvash literature. Everyone in Chuvashia knows his poem Narspi, where he created a number of national characters. The garden is situated on the Volga embankment and is a favourite place of the citizens in summer. The Chuvash Drama theatre is named after him.

We are proud of Cheboksary and our famous people who lived and created here.
