►Introduction to the Definition Essay

In the introduction, state the term you are going to define. Then either define it yourself or use a dictionary definition, naming the dictionary and quoting from it. In your thesis statement, restate the term you are going to define and in which way or how you are going to define it, giving two or three aspects with which you will illustrate your definition. Look back at the thesis statement of the student essay to see the three aspects of daily life the student used.

Using etymologies

In your introduction, you may want to look at the word's origin or etymology. Sometimes the original meaning of the word is quite different from its present meaning, and you may want to show this. The Oxford English Dictionary and many other unabridged dictionaries give detailed histories of the origin and development of words. For example, in Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, we see that the word boycott comes from Charles Boycott, a land agent in Ireland who was ostracized for refusing to reduce rents; the word prejudice comes from the Latin praejudicium, which is made up of prae, meaning "before" and judicium, which means "judgement."
