PROGRESS CHECK I

Exercise 1. Put the verbs in brackets into the correct passive form: Present Simple, Past Simple or Future Simple.

It (recognise) that smoking is bad for your health. 5. Mercedes Cars (made) in Germany. 6. Skiing (invent) in Norway. 7. Our tests (correct) by the teacher next week. 8. The American novel “Huckleberry Finn” (write) by Mark Twain. 9. Many of the world’s diamonds (mine) in South Africa. The stones (send) to Amsterdam where they (sell) to international dealers. The stones (cut) in Antwerp, and they then (sell) to jewellers. 10. This brochure (print) in English and French every year. 11. His new book (finish) next year. 12. You (ask) any questions about your previous job at the interview? 13. Discounts (give) to all regular customers.

Women who leave to have children (pay) a sum of money. 9. I saw an accident yesterday. Two people (take) to hospital. 10. A new stadium (build) opposite our house last year. 11. This office is very inefficient: the telephone never (answer) promptly, and no proper records (keep). 12. The men who (bite) by a snake, (give) a serum. 13. The President (arrive) in Rome yesterday afternoon. Later he (interview) on Italian TV. 14. While I was on holiday, my camera (steal) from my hotel room. 15. By the end of the century traffic (control) by computers and there (not to be) any traffic jams.

 
 


GET + PAST PARTICIPLE

Exercise 1. Read these sentences paying attention to the use of get instead of be in the passive. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. There was a fight at the party but nobody got hurt. 2. I don’t often get invited to parties. 3. I’m surprised Ann didn’t get offered the job. 4. Our dog got run over by a car. 5. Lots of postmen get bitten by dogs. 6. How did the painting get damaged? 7. I am always getting chosen for the unpleasant jobs. 8. Her car got stolen last night. 9. It suddenly started to rain and we all got soaked. 10. It was an accident! We were playing on the couch, and, somehow the vase got broken. 11. He got injured in a car crash. 12. He got fined for breaking the traffic rules. 13. The road got blocked during the snowstorm. 14. They got married last year. 15. Don’t make such a noise. You’ll get turned out. 16. My parents’ fence got blown down in the storm.

Exercise 2. Write out the sentences in which the combination to get + past participle has a passive meaning.

1. Michael got fined for speeding. 2. They got injured in a road accident. 3. Monica never gets discouraged. 4. When nobody phoned her, she got worried. 5. The dog didn’t get fed until noon. 6. Why don’t you get paid for this job? 7. Susan got interested in archaeology when she was in Egypt. 8. Sally got accustomed to cooking. 9. Tom Sawyer told a lie but he got caught. 10. The child got lost in the crowd. 11. People get annoyed when they are asked the same question several times. 12. The vase got broken yesterday. 13. The papers got lost during the war. 14. I get tired very easily. 15. When did they get married? 16. Once he nearly got run over in this street.

 

 

Exercise 4. Complete the sentences using get/got + the verb in the correct form.

1. Ted (sting) by a bee while he was sitting in the garden. 2. How did that window (break)? 3. These tennis courts don’t (use) very often. Not many people want to play. 4. I used to have a bicycle but it (steal). 5. Last night I (stop) by the police as I was driving home. 6. How much did you (pay) last month? 7. Please pack these things very carefully. I don’t want them to (break). 8. People often want to know what my job is. I often (ask) that question. 9. I think I’ve prepared too much food for tomorrow’s party. - Don’t worry. It all (eat). 10. Where’s your car? - It’s (fix). 11. How was your vacation last month? - Terrible. We (rob) and all our traveller’s checks (take).

Exercise 1. Change the following sentences using the passive construction with the pronoun it as the subject. Translate the sentences into Russian.
