One major problem for rural areas in Nepal is that there's almost no possibility to make money without moving to another city or country. This leads to a huge drain on the local community, with most young people leaving the area that their families have lived for generations to look for better opportunities. The lack of anyone between 16 and 35 is noticeable, and without long term solutions there will be no future for villages like Japhe. We hope to help solve this in the future by creating sustainable job opportunities in the region through things like tourism and manufacturing.
We would also love to further support the local community with other essential aspects of their village lives. There is already a medical center nearby the school site, but the overall level of education of these medical professionals isn't the same as we are used to in other countries. Local people need to take the 9 hour daily bus ride to Kathmandu if they cannot be helped here. If we can find long term volunteers with medical experience to work with the center, then hopefully we can improve the quality of life of some local people.
One other aspect of local life that is very delicate is farming which is the main source of income for the valley. Unfortunately, due to growing economic pressures in Nepal, farmers often give up their traditional farming methods that their family has followed for years in order to make quick cash. It would be a huge boost to local farmers to get new ideas in topics like irrigation, horticulture, cattle-breeding and poultry farming. The school system in Nepal is much like most countries, with the majority of the schools being local government run schools. Students usually can stay in school until class 10, where they will sit their SLC examinations. These examinations decide the future of each student, if they pass they will be able to continue into higher education. If they fail, their choices are limited. Unfortunately in 2012, only about 38% of all students who left these governmental schools passed their SLC exams, leaving many young Nepalese facing uncertain futures.
Until 2006 families in Japhe could only choose to go to governmental schools, which encouraged the founders of the Himalayan Spirit
Academy to open this school. However, creating a school is not an easy process, with the biggest initial problem being the need of a school building. This has been temporarily solved with the building of cheap and easy to erect bamboo huts, where the school now operates. However, this is not a long term solution as classes are small and basic, with soil for a floor and small classrooms.
