Names of lakes are used with the definite article if there is no word lake before the proper name: the Pacific Ocean (the Pacific), the Black Sea, the Thames, the Ohio River, the Mediterranian (sea), the Suez Canal, the Finnish Gulf, the English Channel, the Ontario (Lake Ontario).

15). With names of some countries, towns, sreets, squares: the Crimea, the USA, the United Kingdom, the Caucasus, the Ruhr, the Netherlands, the Congo, the Transvaal, the Lebanon, the Sudan, the Argentine (но иногда Argentine), the Hague, the Strand, the Mall, the Dardanelles.

16). With names of mountain chains: the Urals, the Alps, the Rockies, the Crimean Mountains, the Himalayas, the Carpathians.

17). With names of deserts: the Gobi, the Sahara.

18). With names of groups of islands and archipelagos: the Philippines, the Canaries, the Orkneys, the Malay Archipelago, the Fiji Isles, the Cape Verde Isles, the Bermudas, the Hebrides, the Azores.

19). With the words taiga, tundra, steppe, prarie.

20. With names of ships, hotels, newspapers, magazines: the “Astoria”, “The Times”, the “Yermack”.

21). With names of monuments, museums, galleries, libraries, cinemas, theatres: the British Museum, the Tretyakow Gallery, the Nelson Monument, the Bolshoi Theatre, the National Gallery.

22). With names of cardinal points: the North, the East, the West, the South.

With nouns of days and months modified by a particularising attribute.
