William Daniell, (1769-1837), was the elder son of the landlord of the Swan Inn in Chertsey. In 1779, on the death of his father, he was taken to London by his uncle Thomas Daniell, who was an artist and a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. He and his uncle spent the period 1785 to 1794 travelling around India, from which, on their return to England, they produced a series of prints which were published under the title Oriental Scenery. William Daniell was a gifted artist in oils and watercolours. He was good at transferring his pictures to prints using the aquatint technique. He was elected an Associate Professor of the Royal Academy at the age of 38, and a Royal Academician at the age of 53. The artistic work for which he is best known is, A Voyage Round Great Britain, which was published over the period 1814 to 1825, and includes 308 aquatint prints of coastal views. ______________________________________написать о потряс. Daniell's complete journey round Great Britain, starting and finishing at Land’s End, was accomplished in six separate excursions over the period 1813 to 1823. He travelled north to Wigton, to continue his journey up the west-north coast of Scotland and down the east coast as far as Dundee.
Daniell spent July and August 1815 travelling around the Hebrides, during which he spent two or three weeks on Skye and Raasay. His route is shown on the map. On his return home at the end of 1815, he worked 139 of his sketches up into aquatint prints. Seventeen of these were of Eigg, Rum, Skye and Raasay and were published with an accompanying text in 1818 and 1819. He admits that he found the selection very difficult. There were many very attractive views of Skye and Raasay, which he felt he had to reject in order to maintain a balanced treatment of the complete journey around the British coast.
