New York is the largest city and port in the US. It is the industrial and cultural centre of the country. It is also the financial and business centre of the world. It is the centre of the political life, the centre of the mass media and the world's biggest bank centre.
New York City has five boroughs and shelters roughly 8 million people – up to 16 million if you include the suburbs. In this beautiful metropolis nicknamed the Big Apple you can do and experience everything.
New York is carefully planned and it is easy for a stranger to find his way there. The city has been built rectangularly. All the streets, except Broadway, run either north and south (avenues), or east and west (streets). Only Broadway, the centre of the theatres and nightlife, runs diagonally across the city. Broadway is known as "The Great White Way" because of the electric signs which turn night into day.
The Americans have not given the New York streets names of their famous men, but have called them by ordinal numbers or letters of the alphabet, for example, Second Street, First Avenue, Avenue A.
The centre of New York is located on the granite island of Manhattan, which lies between the Hudson River and the East River. Manhattan is known to have been purchased by the Dutch from the local Indians in 1626 for 24 dollars. The English took the colony over by force in 1664. New Amsterdam was renamed New York.
