Listening Compr ehension (th e second term)
1. I’m Jane Buster and I’m here today to tell about my work. People ask me why I decided to start a new
magazine. Well, I’ve been a journalist for many years working for newspapers and magazines in this country
and abroad. I have always dreamt of starting my own magazine, not because I want to be rich but because
I want to do something different. And now I have done it! It is different from other magazines and I’m sure
it’s going to be successful. Speaking about the magazine itself, it’s a local magazine that will come out each
Thursday — it’s the same size as the local weekly newspaper and in fact, it looks very similar, but it doesn’t
carry news and it doesn’t report on events as they happen. I think it is an important difference. You can buy
it in all the usual places you would buy your local newspaper.
In our magazine we want to write about the lives of local people. They may be famous or not but they have all
done something interesting such as developing a new business. There are several famous artists in the city who
have talked to us about their lives, in the first issue. We hope to interview a wide variety of people.
2. — Were you busy during your spring holidays, Mike? I phoned you, but your mum told you weren’t in the
city.
— Quite right, Nick. I went to the sports camp with my friends.
— Well, I know you’re fond of volleyball.
— Yes, I am. But we all did new sports there. I had some horse-riding lessons.
— Really? What did the others do?
— Well, Sam went skating.
— But he has never tried! He has always played tennis.
— Right, but he was so happy to learn skating.
— Did Jack go with you?
— Yes, he played volleyball and his cousin Paul played basketball.
— Did they? Usually Jack plays table tennis and Paul does karate.
— But they played volleyball well. And Susan tried to play golf.
— Was it difficult for her? She had never tried before.
— Yes, she goes horse-riding, but she enjoyed playing golf greatly. And Ann played football!
— Football! I can’t believe it. She hadn’t played any ball games before.
— Yes, she had always been fond of swimming. But she found football to be an exciting game. Oh, we all
had a wonderful time in the camp.
— I hope I can join you next time.
3. The Hebrides are probably the best-known group of Scottish islands which are situated off the west coast
of Scotland. They are traditionally divided into two main groups: the Inner and the Outer Hebrides. These
islands have a long history of occupation dating back to 6500 BC. The historical and cultural development
of the Hebrides was greatly influenced by Celtic, Norse and English speaking people, this fact is reflected in
the names given to the islands. Nowadays the Hebrides contain the largest concentration of Scottish Gaelic
speakers in Scotland.
4. — Have you already decided about your summer holidays, Adam?
— Well, not yet. We are still discussing the ways to spend the holidays.
— Are there many ideas about the way to have a rest?
— You see, Pam, all the members of my family think that his or her preference to spend holidays is the best
one. For example, my father enjoys fishing somewhere at a quiet river, sleeping in a tent and cooking
food on fire.
— Don’t you think it’s a good rest, Adam?
— Well, not for me. I can’t stay at one and the same place for a long time. I like travelling, seeing new places,
meeting new people. Last year I went on a tour around Europe. It was great! I met so many new friends!
— Oh, travelling is a real fun. But does your mum like travelling?
— Mum can’t imagine her holidays without shopping. She knows all fashionable boutiques in every big city.
I hate shopping. You spend all day watching clothes and perfumes and in the evening you get so tired
that you can’t move your legs. I don’t enjoy such entertainments and neither does my father.
— Well, Adam, what about your sister? Does she like to go shopping too?
— No, the only thing Alice enjoys is lying on the beach or at a swimming pool and talking on the telephone
with her friends. It’s too boring for me.
— It seems to me you really have a problem with planning your holidays, Adam.
— Yes, Pam. I suppose, the only reasonable decision is to spend the holidays separately.
5. Camp The Green Valley is a camp for boys situated in Plymouth, Massachusetts. This incredible summer
camp is located on a gorgeous 3-mile long fresh water lake with 15 acres of space for activities which
include sailing, golf, computers, water-skiing, tennis, football and lots more. We play daily at the local sport
grounds and often have our own tournaments. Excellent instructions are provided for every type of activity.
The fully trained staff consists of lifeguards and sport instructors who will ensure a safe and fun environment
for everyone on and off the sport grounds and the lake.
At the camp our philosophy is «Happy food makes a happy camper». We offer healthy food for our
campers. We are also sensitive to each camper’s food allergy needs. Your kids are going to love food –
we’re sure of it! We serve campers in two basic styles. They are buffets and family style. The buffets allow
us to give the campers choices. Family style is larger platters of food served to the tables. Once a week we
go outside for a burger and barbeque.
