II. Practical Task: (with explanation)
1. Represent the relationship between morphemes, allomorphs and
morphs using a diagram.
Commissioned, prepared, sprawled
Com+missio+ned = 3 morphemes: Com - prefix (bound, overt), derivational - Miss - root (free, overt) ion - Lx.suffix (bound, overt), derivational - ed - Gr.suffix (bound, overt) inflectional | Pre+pare+ed - 3 morphemes: Pre - Prefix (bound, overt), derivational Pare - root (bound, overt) - ed - Gr.suffix (bound, overt) inflectional | Sprawl+ed = 2 morphemes Sprawl - root (free, overt) - ed - Gr.suffix (bound, overt) inflectional | |||||||||||
There are three words, from two to four morphemes in each word (they make a word), the last may or may not stand alone. Particularly, com-, pre- (prefixes) and -ion (suffix) are derivational and -ed is an inflectional morphemes that are bound. Also, the root morphemes are miss and sprawl that are free and can stand alone. Although the meaning of 'to get ready for' is represented with the help of prefix 'pre-' being added to the root 'pare'. So the stems are commission, prepare and sprawl. Its actual phonetic representation is the morph, in this case it is [id] ('-ed') with the different morphs ([t], [d], [id]) representing the same morpheme being grouped as its allomorphs.
Prepared [әd], commissioned [d], sprawled [d]
Morpheme = -ed
[id] = morph
