Aim: internal summative assessment is aimed at gathering evidence supporting the existence of knowledge, understanding and skills of students on the content of the curriculum in accordance with the course plans.
The aim of the chemistry programme as described in the NIS Subject Programme for Chemistry-High, is to give learners an understanding of substances and their transformation, as well as the leading ideas, laws and theories which relate to the properties of substances, their composition and structure.
Overview of Grade 12 ISAs and Skills Groups
The Test Specification describes internal summative assessment on the subject of Chemistry for 12th grade of Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools.
The subject Chemistry will be assessed on the following Skills Groups
Skills Groups | Skills Groups |
· Knowledge · Understanding | |
· Application · Analysis · Synthesis · Evaluation |
In the Grade 12 Course Plan there is balanced approach in each term with the acquisition of knowledge and the application of this knowledge fairly equally represented for each term. To reflect the skills which are embedded in the Subject Programme and which are core to the NIS approach, skills involved in the second Skills Group - Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation - will develop as learners move through the year. This is reflected in the percentage of marks against the two Skills Groups through the terms as shown on the next page.
The Practical Skills element of the chemistry course plans will be addressed with an alternative to practical approach. This paper-based assessment present practical scenarios in context, and draws on the skills in Skills Group 2.
A suggested allocation of marks against Skills Groups for each term is shown in this specification. This should be viewed as a guide and some flexibility may be required to fit the questions produced against the specification for the term. A suggested allocation of marks against Couse Plan units and Skills Group is also shown. This is based on the consideration of which task types are most suitable for assessing the skills included in the Skills Groups for this subject at this level. Progression of ISAs across terms

For Grade 12 Chemistry the relevant task types are:
· Multiple Choice / Closed questions: The learner choses the correct answer from a list. This can be choosing an answer from four alternatives, sentence completion by choosing the correct word from a list, joining linked words in two lists, etc.
· Short response: This is a question requiring a written answer between one word and a few sentences in length, usually worth 1 or 2 marks.
· Structured.: The question is divided into several shorter sub-parts, usually containing Multiple Choice / Closed Questions and Short Response, usually of increasing difficulty on the same area.
· Extended Writing: This is a question requiring an answer several sentences in length, typically worth 3 or more marks.
Different parts of structured questions may assess different Skill Groups.
