В подтексте этих стихотворений — сочувственная улыб­ка, а не насмешка, как это бывало у других поэтов. Басе не разрешает себе никакого гротеска, искажающего образ.

Памятником нового стиля Басе являются два поэти­ческих сборника: «Мешок угля» (1694) и «Соломенный плащ обезьяны» (книга вторая), вышедший уже после смерти Басе, в 1698 году.

Творческая манера поэта не была постоянной, она несколько раз менялась в соответствии с его духовным ростом. Поэзия Басе — летопись его жизни. Вниматель­ный читатель, перечитывая стихи Басе, каждый раз от­крывает что-то новое для себя. Это и есть одно из заме­чательных свойств действительно великой поэзии.

Значительная часть стихотворений Басе - плоды его путевых раздумий. Многие стихи, полные пронзающей силы, посвящены умершим друзьям. Есть стихи на случай (и некоторые из них превосходные): в похвалу гостепри­имному хозяину, в знак благодарности за присланный подарок, приглашение друзьям, подписи к картинам. Ма­ленькие мадригалы, крошечные элегии, но как много в них сказано! Как слышится в них жажда человеческого участия, просьба не позабыть, не ранить обидным равно­душием! Не раз поэт отказывался от своих слишком забывчивых друзей, запирал дверь хижины, чтобы скорее отворить ее снова.

«Хокку» нельзя составлять из разных кусков, как ты это сделал,— говорит Басе своему ученику.— Его надо ко­вать, как золото». Каждое стихотворение Басе — гармони­ческое целое, все элементы которого подчинены единой задаче: наиболее полно выразить поэтическую мысль.

Басе создал пять путевых дневников, написанных ли­рической прозой в чередовании со стихами: «Кости, беле­ющие в поле», «Путешествия в Касима», «Письма стран­ствующего поэта», «Дневник путешествия Сарае ина» и наиболее известный — «По тропинкам севера» 1.(Басе. Лирическая проза его отмечена чертами того стиля, что и хокку: она сочетает изящество с «прозаизмом» и даже простонародность многих выражений, предельно ла­конична и богата скрытым эмоциональным подтекстом. И в ней тоже, как и в поэзии. Басе сочетал верность старинным традициям с умением видеть жизнь по-новому.

Зимой 1682 года пожар уничтожил значительную часть Эдо, сгорела и «Банановая хижина» Басе. Это, как он сам говорит, дало окончательный толчок давно созревшему в нем решению отправиться странствовать. Осенью 1684 года он покинул Эдо в сопровождении одного из своих учени­ков. Десять лет с небольшими перерывами странствовал Басе по Японии. Иногда он возвращался в Эдо, где друзья отстроили его «Банановую хижину». Но вскоре вновьего,«как послушное облачко», увлекал ветер странствий.Он скончался в городе Осака, окруженный своими учениками

Басе шел по дорогам Японии, как посол самой поэзии. зажигая в людях любовь к ней и приобщая их к подлин­ному искусству. Он умел найти и пробудить творческий дар даже в профессиональном нищем. Басе проникал иногда в самую глубь гор, где «никто не подберет с земли упавший плод дикого каштана», но ценя уединение, все же никогда не был отшельником. В странствиях своихонне бежал от людей, а сближался с ними. Длинной чередой проходят в его стихах крестьяне за полевыми работами, погонщики лошадей, рыбаки, сборщики чайных листьев.

Басе запечатлел их чуткую любовь к красоте. Кресть­янин разгибает на миг свою спину, чтобы полюбоваться полной луной или послушать столь любимый в Японии крик пролетной кукушки. Порой Басе изображает приро­ду в восприятии крестьянина, как бы отождествляя себя с ним. Он радуется густым колосьям поля или тревожится о том, что ранние дожди испортят солому. Глубокое участие к людям, тонкое понимание их душевного мира — одно из лучших свойств Басе как поэта гуманиста. Вот почему в разных уголках страны как праздника ждали его прихода.

С удивительной силой духа Басе стремился к большой, поставленной им себе цели. Поэзия в его время пришла в упадок, и он чувствовал себя призванным поднять ее до уровня высокого искусства. Дорога странствий стала творческой мастерской Басе. Новую поэзию нельзя было создать, запершись в четырех стенах.

«„Великий учитель с Южной горы" 1 (Имеется в виду Кобо-дайси (774-835) - буддийский про­поведник, поэт, писатель и ученый) заповедал неког­да: „Не иди по следам древних, но ищи то, что искали они". Это верно и для поэзии»,-такую мысль высказал Басе в прощальном напутствии одному из своих учени­ков. Иными словами, для того чтобы уподобиться поэтам древности, надо было не просто подражать им, но заново пройти их путь, увидеть то, что видели они, заразиться их творческим волнением, но писать по-своему.

Лирическая поэзия Японии традиционно воспевала природу, например, красоту кустарника хаги. Осенью его тонкие гибкие ветки покрываются бело-розовыми цвета­ми. Любование цветами хаги — этим исчерпывалась в ста­рину тема стихотворения. Но вслушайтесь, как говорит Басе об одиноком путнике в поле:

Намокший, идет под дождем...

Но песни достоин и этот путник,

Не только хаги в цвету.

Образ природы в поэзии Басе очень часто имеет вто­рой план, иносказательно говоря о человеке и его жизни. Алый стручок перца, зеленая скорлупа каштана осенью, дерево сливы зимою - символы непобедимости челове­ческого духа. Осьминог в ловушке, спящая цикада на листке, унесенная потоком воды,— в этих образах поэт выразил свое чувство непрочности бытия, свои размыш­ления о трагизме человеческой судьбы.

Многие стихи Басе навеяны преданиями, легендами и сказками. Его понимание красоты имело глубокие наро­дные корни.

Для Басе было характерно ощущение нерасторжимого единства природы и человека, а за плечами людей своего времени он всегда чувствовал дыхание огромной, уходя­щей в глубь веков истории. В ней он находил прочную почву для искусства.

В эпоху Басе простым людям жилось очень трудно и в городе и в деревне. Поэт был свидетелем многих бедст­вий. Он видел детей, покинутых на верную гибель обни­щавшими родителями. В самом начале дневника «Кости, белеющие в поле» есть такая запись:

«Возле реки Фудзи я услышал, как жалобно плачет покинутый ребенок лет трех от роду. Унесло его быстрым течением, и не было у него сил вынести натиск волн нашего скорбного мира. Брошенный, он горюет о своих близких, пока еще теплится в нем жизнь, летучая, как росинка. О маленький кустик хаги, нынче ли ночью ты облетишь или завтра увянешь? Проходя мимо, я бросил ребенку немного еды из своего рукава.

Грустите вы, слушая крик обезьян,

А знаете ли, как плачет ребенок,

Покинутый на осеннем ветру?»

Сын своего времени. Басе, однако, говорит дальше, что в гибели ребенка не повинен никто, так предрешило веление неба. «Человек во власти грозной судьбы» — такая:

концепция человеческой жизни неизбежно порождала чувство незащищенности, одиночества, печали. Совре­менный прогрессивный читатель и литературовед Такакура Тэру отмечает:

«По моему мнению, новая литература Японии начина­ется с Басе. Именно он острее всех, с наибольшей болью выразил страдания японского народа, которые выпали ему на долю в эпоху перехода от средних веков к новому времени» '.

Печаль, звучащая во многих стихах Басе, имела не только философские и религиозные корни и не была только отзвуком его личной судьбы. Поэзия Басе вырази­ла трагизм переходной эпохи, одной из самых значитель­ных в истории Японии, и поэтому была близка и понятна его современникам.

Творчество Басе так многогранно, что его трудно свес­ти к одному знаменателю. Он сам называл себя «печаль­ником», но был и великим жизнелюбцем. Радость внезапной встречи с прекрасным, веселые игры с детьми, яркие зарисовки быта и нравов,— с какой душевной щедростью поэт расточает все новые и новые краски для изображе­ния мира! В конце своей жизни Басе пришел к той мудрой и просветленной красоте, которая доступна толь­ко большому мастеру.

Поэтическое наследие, оставленное Мацуо Басе, включает в себя хокку и «сцепленные строфы». В числе его прозаических сочинений — дневники, предисловия к книгам и отдельным стихам, письма. Они содержат в себе немало мыслей Басе об искусстве. Кроме того, ученики записали его беседы с ними. В этих беседах Басе высту­пает как своеобразный и глубокий мыслитель.

Он основал школу, совершившую переворот в японс­кой поэзии. Среди его учеников были такие высокоода­ренные поэты, как Кикаку, Рансэцу, Дзёсо, Кёрай, Сампу, Сикб.

Нет японца, который не знал бы на память хотя бы несколько стихотворений Басе. Появляются новые изда­ния его стихов, новые книги о его творчестве. Великий поэт с годами не уходит от своих потомков, а приближа­ется к ним.

По-прежнему любима, популярна и продолжает разви­ваться лирическая поэзия хокку (или хайку), фактическим создателем которой был Басе.

Читая стихи Басе, следует помнить одно: все они корот­ки, но в каждом из них поэт искал путь от сердца к сердцу.
