Dangers Facts Alternatives
Avoid products whose labels contain words such as caution, warning, danger, flammable, combustible, poison, and corrosive. Instead, use non-hazardous alternatives whenever possible. However, when using a product for which there is no substitute, follow these tips: · Use it up and avoid disposal problems entirely. · Store hazardous products in their original containers. · Avoid excess: use what you buy; buy only what you need. · Avoid aerosols. · Never dump hazardous wastes on the ground down the storm sewer. · Never throw liquids in the trash. · Never mix one product with another. · Store and use hazardous products in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Improperly disposed of household hazardous waste can place your health and the health of the environment at risk. Proper handling and disposal of household hazardous waste is essential. Be sure to check before you: Trash it! Some household products pose a safety threat to trash haulers and can threaten personal and environmental health when disposed of at landfills, incinerators, and compost sites. Dump it on the ground! Toxic chemicals can seep into the soil and groundwater, or run off into storm sewer system where will empty into a nearby lake or river. Throw it in the storm sewer! Contaminants wash directly into lakes and rivers without treatment. Flush it! Many products cannot be broken down by the waste-water treatment process and are discharged untreated into lakes and rivers.   Quite often, hazardous products can be avoided. Here are a few examples of safer alternatives:   Drain cleaner: pour ½ cup of baking soda and ½ of vinegar down the drain, cover tightly, wait one minute, and rinse with two quarts of boiling water. Do this periodically to dislodge any material that may be accumulating.   Furniture polish: apply plain olive oil and wipe with a soft cloth.   Oven cleaner: sprinkle stain with baking soda or non-chlorinated scouring powder. Wet with enough water to form a paste. Use a copper scrubber and lots of elbow grease. For tough areas allow paste to sit, then remove with a razor blade. Do not use baking soda on heating elements and wires.
