Ukraine is a sovereign state. It has its own territory, government, national emblem and anthem. Its population is 45.560.000 people. The capital is Kyiv.
Ukraine is one of the largest countries of Eastern Europe. It occupies an area of 603 700 sq. km. Its territory stretches for 893 kilometres from north to south and for 1316 kilometres from east to west. The geographical position of Ukraine is very favourable for the development of its relations with the countries throughout the world. It borders on Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania. Ukraine washed by the Black and the Sea of Azov. The major rivers are the Dnieper, the Dniester, the Donets and others. The major part of Ukraine is flat. The Carpathians and the Crimean Mountains make up only 5% of its territory. The climate is mostly moderately continental.
The country lies on the crossroads of the ways from Asia to Europe. It is a well developed industrial and agricultural republic. It is rich in iron ore, coal, natural gas, oil, manganese ore, potassium, salt and other mineral resources.
Ukraine is a big metallurgical, machine-building, fuel and power centre. It has been a producer of chemicals and agricultural raw materials for many years. Ukraine has been the centre of coal and ore mining, iron and steel engineering for many years too. Much attention is paid to the increase of economic effectiveness in farm production. The production of cereals, meat, milk, eggs and agricultural products is well spread.
The biggest cities are Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa, Lviv and others.
There are quite a lot of sea ports: Odessa, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Izmail, Mariupol and Kerch.
Scientists of Ukraine enriched world science with important discoveries and inventions. They do important research work in biology, medicine, nuclear physics, in the exploration of space. Many Ukrainian scientists are the members of the Academy of Sciences and the academies of foreign countries.
Ukraine has an ancient history. It is rich in historical monuments and different places of interest, to see and to be proud of.
Ukraine has many professional state theatres, there are a lot of public libraries and state museums. The best works of Ukrainian literature and theatrical, musical, choreographical and decorative art are know through out the world.
Ukraine has been a member of Organization of the United Nations since 1945 and has taken part in the work of many international organizations, has had wide relations with different countries since 1991. These days a great number of various joint ventures and economic, cultural and political projects have appeared in the country. Ukraine is visited by delegations, groups of specialists, art companies, sport teams and tourists from different countries of the world. From year to year the number of spheres of relations with the countries abroad grow and will go on growing.
