People all over the world are fond of sports and games. Sport makes people healthy, keeps them fit, more organized and better disciplined.
А considerable part of the population of Ukraine is drawn into sport activities. Some people go in for sports for their health and some for professional aims. They are members of sports societies, use its sports facilities and participate in contests. There are a lot of stadiums, sports grounds, swimming pools, football fields in each town. Practically all kinds of sports are popular in Ukraine, but football, lawn tennis, figure skating enjoy the greatest popularity. A lot of people are fond of jogging. In the morning and in the evening we can see people jogging in the parks, stadiums and even streets. In every school pupils spend much time going in for sports.
Sports in Ukraine has their history. Such kinds of sports as swimming, running, equestrian sport, wrestling have already developed. The system of military and physical training in Ukraine was based on national games and physical exercises.
The first sports clubs were founded at the end of 19th century in Ukraine.
They were not numerous, among them there were aristocratic yachting and tennis clubs. The first of them were opened in Kyiv in 1869 and in Odessa in 1895. At the beginning of the 20th century the first athletic clubs appeared. They were founded as a part of a medical centre. In 1900 196 clubs, that included nearly 8000 people existed in Ukraine. In 1912 the first 2 months’ courses on training the specialists in physical education were organized in Kyiv. The first stadiums and sport centres were built in 1913 after the Olympiad. That year some sport magazines appeared too.
Nowadays specialists in physical education are trained by Kharkiv State Academy of Physical Culture, in Kyiv, Lviv and other cities.
The largest stadiums are in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk. Kyiv stadium is for 100 000 spectators.
The most popular kinds of sports in Ukraine are football, volleyball, athletics, shooting, gymnastics and chess.
In 2012 Ukraine managed to organize and hold a fantastic European Football Championship. Euro 2012 in Ukraine was held with a unique atmosphere and the host nations have got new standards for the level of the tournament. Ukraine presented itself in the world. Our country has received promotion to the whole world. The tournament Euro 2012 has become the subject of great pride for the hosts of the competition.
Ukrainian sportsmen also took part in the London 2012 Games. There were 9 gold medals in such sports as canoeing, boxing, weightlifting, 4 silver medals in canoeing, track and field athletics, boxing and arm wrestling and 11 bronze medals in shooting, fencing, weightlifting, gymnastics, track and field athletics and boxing.
Ukrainian sportsmen will have competed in new Olympic Games by the end of February 2014 in Russia.
Sports is paid much attention to in Ukraine and our people are always fond of it.
