  1. to bore (v) – (вызывать скуку, надоедать) He bores me to death.

bored (p.p.) – (скучающий) He gave me a bored look.

boring (a) – (надоедливый, скучный) Gosh, wasn't it a boring movie!

boredom (n) – (скука) She could no longer stand the boredom of a beach holiday.

sheer boredom – (непереносимая скука) Some teenagers turn to crime out of sheer boredom.

  1. to receive (v) – (получать, принимать) We are receiving the Browns on Sunday.

to receive/come in for criticism – (подвергаться критике) The government received a lot of criticism in the national press.

to be on the receiving end – (быть объектом критики) As a teacher I often criticize my pupils, and it was weird to find myself once on the receiving end.

reception (n) – (прием; приемная, стойка регистратора) We were given the warmest

reception. She works at the reception.

  1. bare (а) – (голый, обнаженный, незащищенный) The room was bare of furniture. Her legs were bare, her dress was dirty.

barely (adv) – (едва) We barely had time to catch the train.

a bare majority – (незначительное большинство) They won the elections by a bare majority.

at the bare mention – (при одном упоминании) He flies off the handle at the bare mention of his name.

barefoot (a) – (босиком) It was nice to walk barefoot on the grass.

  1. to glance, shoot/throw a glance – (бросить взгляд) He glanced at the passport and let me pass by. He shot a quick glance at me.

at a glance – (сразу, немедленно) I could see at a glance the girl was ill.

  1. to survey (v) – (осматривать, изучать с какой-то целью, сделать обзор) We surveyed the condition of the house and decided to buy it. The Prime Minister surveyed the situation in the Middle East.
  2. to appoint (v) – (назначать) He was appointed Headmaster of the school. We must appoint a time to meet again.

appointment (n) – (назначение на должность; условленная встреча;) We were very pleased about his appointment. I have an appointment with the doctor at 4.

  1. to ridicule (v) – (высмеивать) They all ridiculed the idea.

an object of ridicule – (объект насмешек) This stupid outfit made her an object of ridicule.

ridiculous (a) – (смехотворный, нелепый) She looks ridiculous in that new flashy outfit.

  1. to make sure – (удостовериться, убеждаться, обеспечить) Make sure the doors are locked. Make sure there's a train at 5.
  2. genuine (a) – (подлинный, настоящий, неподдельный) A genuine Rubens was found in one of the provincial museums. They have a genuine affection for each other. She bought an expensive genuine leather bag.
  3. to prepare (v) – (приготавливать(ся), готовить(ся)) Be prepared to start early. I have to prepare dinner for ten people.

to make preparations for – (делать все возможное при подготовке к важному событию) They have started making preparations for the Sochi Olympics opening ceremony.

in preparation for – (готовиться к чему-то с надеждой на успех) They concentrated their efforts in preparation for the coming Olympics.
