The Statue was presented to the USA by France in 1886 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of American independence. It has become the welcoming symbol in New York. The Statue itself is about 50 metres high and stands on a pedestal of almost the same height. It is the work of the well-known French sculptor Frederick Bartholdi. The statue is made from copper sheets and it is hollow inside. Inside there is a circular stairway from the base to the crown. There is also a lift in it. The figure shows a young woman freeing itself from shackles. She holds a torch in her right hand above her head, and in her left hand there is a tablet with the date "July 4th, 1776" on it, which symbolizes the Declaration of Independence.

YOUTH PROBLEMS
Today it is fashionable to talk about teenage problems. An adolescent is a person who is no longer a child but not yet an adult. In many countries a person legally becomes adult at the age of 18. On the one hand, our society agrees that 15-17- year-old people are old enough to be responsible for their doings. On the other hand, most adults think that teenagers are too young to be taken seriously. Which is more, the majority of teenage challenges seem minor to adults. This misunderstanding produces many problems. Young people have a particular relationship with the world. Being young can really be hard sometimes, especially if one comes from unfavourable background and lacks good life.
Some young people pass through this stage without serious difficulties. Others don’t conform to society’s standards, express their identity in a shocking and rather aggressive way, rebel against the society and reject their parents’ values. A few decades ago alcohol, fights and other kinds of violence were more problems for adults than for young people. But now, as official reports admit, violence, AIDS, drugs and alcohol are more and more associated with youngsters.
Most of the problems that adolescents have are related to school, peer or family pressure.
