SCENE I
· Narrator: This story is about a young girl, Maria, who lives in the monastery of St. Helena. Mother Superior and other abbess send her to a lovely estate of captain Stevenson to look after his children. Let’s look at what is going to happen with her.
(the song Ave Maria is being sung by chorus and the nuns)
· Mother Superior: Children of mine, let’s give our novices a proper appreciation of their dignity. Sister Sofia, what do you think about … Maria?
· S. Sofia: She is a wonderful girl…some of the time.
· Mother Superior: Sister Agatha?
· S. Agatha: It is so easy to love Maria…except of those cases when it is difficult.
(the nuns sing a song about Maria)
M.S. - How do you solve the problem like Maria?
How do you catch the clouds and pin them down?
How do you find the word it means “Maria”?
Sofia * Flippant and glib?
Isabel * The wind in a whisper?
Kathleen * A clown?
M.S. - Many the things you know you like to tell her,
Marry, you think, she ought to understand
Agatha - But how do make her stay and listen to all you say?
Kathleen - How do you keep her way upon the Sun?
M.S. - How do you solve the problem like Maria?
How do you hold the Moon nib in your hand?
· S. Isabel: I like her very dearly…
· S. Kathleen: But she always seems to be in troubles, doesn’t she?
· S. Isabel: Yes, it’s true, but…
(the nuns sing a song)
Kathleen - She climbs the tree, she scraps her knee, her dress has got a tear.
She was on her way to the mess and whistled on the stairs.
Sofia - She’s always late for chapels
Isabel - But her faith in God is real
Kathleen - She’s always late for everything…
Agatha - Except for every meal
Kathleen - I hate to have to say it, but I very firmly feel
Maria can’t be essayed to the abbey.
Isabel - I’d like to say a word in her behalf:
Maria … makes me … laugh.
Agatha - When I’m with her I confuse, out of focus and amused,
And I never know exactly where I am.
Sofia - Unpredictable as weather
She is flighty as a feather
Agatha - She’s a darling
Kathleen - She’s a demon
Isabel - She’s a lamb
Kathleen - She likes pestering any pet,
Holding getting from its nest.
M. S. - She can throw the whole of devilish from the world.
Sofia - She is gentle, she is wild
Agatha - She’s a riddle, she’s a child
Kathleen - She’s a headache
Isabel - She’s an angel
M.S. - She’s a girl

(Maria appears on the stage - running)
How do you hold the Moon nib in your hand?
· Mother Superior: Come to me, my child, it seems to the will of God you’ll have to leave us.
· Maria: Leave you?! Oh, please, don’t send me away
· Agatha: Only for awhile, Maria.
· Mother Superior: There is a family near London that needs a governess till September.
· Maria: Till September?!
· Kathleen: To take care about seven children.
· Maria: Seven?!
· Agatha: Maria, you like children, don’t you?
· Maria: Yes, but…seven.
· Mother Superior: I will tell captain to expect you tomorrow…
· Maria: Captain?!
· Mother Superior: Oh, he is a retired officer of British navy; a fine man and a brave one.
· Isabel: His wife died six years ago and now he brings up the children himself.
· Sofia: As I know, he always has some problems with governess.
· Maria: What problems?
· Mother Superior: Lord will show you in his own good time.
(Maria leaves the stage)
· All nuns: Let God bless her.
How do you solve the problem like Maria?
How do you catch the clouds and pick them down?
How do you find the word it means “Maria”?
How do you hold Maria in your hand?
