Edelweiss, edelweiss, every morning you greet me.
Soft and white, clean and bright – you look happy to meet me.
Blossom in snows you may bloom and grow,
Bloom and grow forever.
Edelweiss, edelweiss, bless my Homeland for ever.
(is sung twice)
· Maria: Children want to say good-bye to everybody, but they need a minute or so. Wait for them, please!
· Captain: Miss Maria, can I have a word with you…
· Baroness: George, sweet heart.
(They leave the stage one by one)
· Helga: Just look at my sister: “George, sweet heart”. If I didn’t know my sister well, I would think she really loves him.
· Max: Isn’t that so?
· Helga: Are you kidding? The only person Eliza loves is she herself. And George is… only temporary passion.
· Max: You have low opinion of your sister.
· Helga: You’ve guessed. I must admit the fact: we have similar features, but, of course, I’m younger and more beautiful. Eliza doesn’t hurry to get married.
· Max: And you?
· Helga: Definitely, no. The marriage is not for me. Adventures, and risk are everything I need.
· Max: I see we have related souls.
· Helga: So, why don’t we discuss it here?
· Max: Good idea! Sit, please.
(They sit on the chairs, Maria, captain and baroness do the same and children start their dance)
There’s a sad song that’s coming from the clock in the hall
And the bells with the sticks sing too.
And upstairs ‘n the nursery you can see a little bird
It’s trying hard to say cuckoo – 2
So long, farewell, aufwiedersehen, good night
I hate to go, and leave this pretty side
Trick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tack,
Trick-tick-tick-tick-tack
So long, farewell, aufwiedersehen, adue
Adue, adue – to you and you and you.
Trick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tack,
Trick-tick-tick-tick-tack
So long, farewell, arevuar, aufwiedersehen
I’d like to stay and taste my first champagne…
Trick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tack,…YES?
Trick-tick-tick-tick-tack…NO!!!
So long, farewell, aufwiedersehen, good night,
I leave and here there is a little sign – GOOD BYE
Trick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tack,
Trick-tick-tick-tick-tack
I’d like to go, I cannot say a lie
We are flakes, we are clouds, we think that we can fly
Trick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tack,
Trick-tick-tick-tick-tack
The sun has gone to bed and I see stars…
So long, farewell, aufwiedersehen, good-bye, good-bye, good-bye…
· Captain: Thank you, Maria. The performance was great.
· Maria: Say these words to your children, captain.
· Captain: If you want you can stay with us for supper.
· Max: You can sit next to me.
· Maria: I don’t think my dress suits the occasion.
· Captain: Don’t worry. You could change your dress and we will wait for you. Shall we?
· Baroness: I will help you, dear.
(Everybody leaves the stage except Maria and baroness)
· Maria: It’s so kind of you to help me.
· Baroness: That’s nothing. It is a great joy for me.
· Maria: I’m afraid none of my dresses suits well.
· Baroness: Are you sure? And what about the dress you are wearing? George can’t take his eyes off you.
· Maria: Can’t take his eyes off?!
· Baroness: Well, it is enough, dear. We are women. Why should we pretend as if we don’t notice men pay attention to us?
· Maria: I hope… it is a joke, baroness.
· Baroness: I don’t even try to do that.
· Maria: But I didn’t do anything… special…
· Baroness: And you didn’t have to. Do you know that the best impression is made upon a man by a woman who is head over ears in love with him…
· Maria: I should think a little… alone…
· Baroness: Then think, my dear. I don’t want to change the governess.
(Maria leaves the stage)
