Europe, being always the most developed region in the world, nevertheless has political and economic differences. Nowadays Europe is ‘one organism’ with 28 various countries each of which has its own economic and political system but exists in one supranational European system. Are the reasons for and purposes of European integration? It’s the main question.
A noteworthy fact is that EC didn’t exist as one ‘organism’ until 1945. Thus, there were 6 periods on the road to EU. Firstly, between 1945 and 1959 there were processes of integration. As of 1959, the European Coal and Steel community began to unite European countries economically and politically in order to secure lasting pace. The 6th founders are Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxemburg and the Netherlands. Also in 1957, the Treaty of Rome created the European Economic Community or ‘Common Market’.
Secondly, 1960’s was a good period for the economy, helped by the fact that EU countries gas stopped charging custom duties when they trade with each other. Moreover, there was agreement to control over food production.
Then, in 1970’s EU firstly emerged. Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom joint the EU in 1973. In addition, the EU regional policy started to transfer huge sums of money to create jobs and infrastructure in poorer countries. Moreover, all citizens could have elected their members in EU directly for the first time.
Next, between 1980-1989 the single European Act was signed. It provides the basis of sorting out the problems with the free-flow of trade across EU borders.
The fifth stage – 1990’s – was very important for the EU. The concept of the single market was completed with the 4 freedoms of: movement of goods, services, people and money. Europeans have agreed to protect the environment and to act together for the purposes of security and defense matters. By 1995, there were 10 members.
Regarding sixth stage – the early 2000’s – the EU has become larger: 12 European countries have joint the community. Besides, a financial crisis has lead to closer economic cooperation between EU countries.
To conclude, nowadays Europe hopes that investment in new green and climate-friendly technologies with closer European cooperation will bring lasting growth and welfare. Despite this, many experts predict severe difficulties for the EU because of anti-balanced development of its members. Nevertheless, the EU remains the most influential international community in this region, which solves economic and security problems.
