How did it happen that you came to Russia?

I started studying Russian quite a long time ago. My master thesis was on Russia: industrial policy under Putin, and as I wanted to continue to work on this topic, my PhD studies were also about Russia. During the last year of my PhD I worked in Ekaterinburg, I was teaching at UGU, and then just wanted to stay in Russia. I wanted to continue my studies on Russia, and HSE is by far the best place in the social sciences to do this, I think.

The first time I came to Russia was in 2003. I started studying Russian in 2002, at our university we had a choice between Russian and Arabic as foreign languages, so I chose Russian. In the summer of 2003 I took a Russian language summer school in Russia. I took a bus from Paris, as flights were still quite expensive at the time. So I took a bus Friday morning, and Sunday night arrived in Moscow.

It's different when you fly to a country from going to a country by bus. At the time, we had to wait at the border between Poland and Belarus for about 8 hours. We had to get out of the bus while the luggage was checked. Very different from the way we travel today.

Did you have any expectations about Russia? Were the expectations true?

I thought it was going to be colder. I took a blanket with me and put it onto my backpack, but then never used it for the whole trip. It was a warm summer.

It was very different from today. If you've never been in any former Soviet country before, when you come to Russia the first time, it strikes you how things are different. People don't smile, for example.

Do you have a story about how the difference in mindset, language, cultural norms and values have lead to an interesting situation?

After my first week in Moscow, I took a train to St. Petersburg. I was travelling in a sleeping compartment, my neighbors were an old man, about 80 years old, and his son. And they started drinking, really a lot. I thought " this old guy is going to die!" They both drank a lot. But the next morning when he woke up, he was in good condition. He had a handshake like a bear when we said good bye.

When did you start to work at HSE? What are the courses you are teaching now here?

In September 2013. So, I've been working here for a year and a half.

I'm teaching Introduction to Institutional Economics for 3rd year students of Political Science.

In the course we look how institutional settings in different countries influence economic development in these countries. For example, we study which institutions exist today in Russia, and then compare them to China. We also looked a bit on North Korea, and on the differences in institutions and economic development between North and South Korea.
