There are many attributes that are culturally associated with women and based on the research by Syed and Murray (2008) there are three main attributes that cover most of the other ones: “ethics of care and nurturance, informal-interpersonal communication, and a participative leadership style” (Vasavada, 472). Table 2 (retrieved from “A Cultural Feminist Perspective on Leadership”) would cover some of the basics for all of the three values.

Feminine Values of Leadership
Value | Description | Literature |
Ethic of care and nurturance | Supporting and soothing others, helping solve relational and interpersonal problems, sensitive, emotional, accepting direction from others | Bass, 1998; White, 1998; Eagly, Wood, Diekman, et al., 2000; Burnier, 2003; Mandell & Pherwani, 2003; Groves, 2005; Fine & College, 2009 |
Communication style | Open-door policy, interpersonal approach, use of imperatives, tone of requests instead of orders, frequent use of “sorry”, team-centered approach, prefer frequent contact and information sharing | Harper & Hirokawa,1988; Lauterbach & Weiner 1996; Nanus & Dobbs, 1999; Simmons, 2002; Popp, Donovan, Crawford, Marsh & Peele, 2003; Furst & Reeves, 2008; |
Leadership style | Interpersonally oriented, more democratic tendencies develop effective relationships with subordinates and superiors, ability, ability to listen, empowerment oriented. | Eagly & Johnson, 1990; Bass, 1998; Carless, 1998; Kabacoff, 2000; Eagly & Johannesen-Schmidt, & van Engen, 2003; Trinidad & Normore, 2005; |
Ethics of care and nurturing is a very important value. “Women consider nurturing a core value” (Vasavada, 474). The ability of women to relate with various people around and be able to care about them is thought to be very important for the society and organizations. Some women tend to even leave their workplace so they would be able to provide more care and support for their family. “If high-potential women are leaving their careers to care for their families, they’re not doing it on purpose” (Harvard Business Review, 87). Another important feature is the recognition of the need to combine different social roles - not only an active participant of work and social life, but also the “mistress of the house”, the mother. Women elect different ways to combine these roles, although most roles are looked by the women in the similar way. “An ethic of care refers to compassion and a sense of responsibility for helping others as well as improving the overall environment (Burnier, 2003)” (Vasavada, 474). This also greatly improves the atmosphere of the workplace where concepts like care would be much appreciated. Unfortunately, there is a “masculine expectation” of leadership’s qualities that don’t technically agree with the leadership style of females that includes nurturing and care. Because of this stereotype, women have much more difficulties with applying those values in their workplace.
Another great female characteristic is the way they communicate with the people around them. Styles of communication that are used by women should be separately admired as they are much more open-minded when comparing them with males. “Feminine communication style is more indirect, elaborate, and emotional” (Vasavada, 475). They use this style in a way that gets people performing much better and doing all the work with more motivation as they are usually not ordered to do something but actually requested by female workers. “The feminine linguistic style can help establish rapport and encourage a partner to respond, feminine values such as focusing on relationships and social interaction are beneficial in a modern organizational setting” (Ibarra et al., 60).However, not only female style of communication can improve the organizations’ environment. Incorporating both male and female qualities into one specific leadership role could greatly help organizations.
The last value is the leadership style. Overall both males and females do not have a lot of differences in leadership styles except that women are more interpersonally oriented and tend to create many effective relationships with workers. “In addition, women leaders used a more transformational style of leadership and were rated higher than men on communication, feedback, and developing effective relationships with subordinates and superiors” (Vasavada, 476). In a way, the relationships become more informal and more engaging when there is a feminine leadership style in use. This causes the mood in the workplace to go up and become lighter.
