Abstract
Learning a foreign language is not so easy since there are some different grammar rules in language systems and these differences cause learners to make errors in writing. This research paper deal with grammatical error analysis and describes the grammatical errors in writing assignments committed by the freshmen of Philology Faculty in Suleyman Demirel University in the academic year of 2013/2014. The focus of this study is on a classification of common grammatical errors and the source of the most frequent types of them.
I. Introduction
Most students find writing hard to do even though they write by using their mother tongue. The difficulty becomes even greater if they write in second or foreign language. From my personal experience I tend to claim that writing is the most difficult skill for second or foreign language learners to master. Because it is not just producing words and sentences, which are grammatically and logically linked, but is way of thinking and creating well-organized ideas and thoughts. Decidedly speaking is also way of producing thoughts; however writing is more complex and not spontaneous, ephemeral as speaking. Parlin Pardede, a lecturer at Christian University of Indonesia observed the freshmen of the English Department of FKIP-UKI revealed that the low achievement in writing was possibly the fact that writing is a very complex process due to the many skills involved and the many activities to be carried out. The skills involved in writing cover the application of correct grammatical rules, choosing exact diction, using proper punctuations, and organizing ideas into appropriate sentences, paragraphs and passage.” [1] Another possible reason according to Tongue (1997) was due to the fact that the structures and vocabulary occasionally taught to the secondary school students do not, as a rule, belong to the same language. [2] In other words good understanding on grammar and structures are crucial. Writing in different language is not always as easy as writing in our own language since there are some different grammar rules in the writing systems and these differences sometimes cause to make errors and mistakes. Therefore, it is obvious that Kazakhstani students make a lot of errors when they write in English and such problem is prevalent for all foreign language learners. The goal of the study is to gain information about grammar errors in order to know the linguistic category of grammatical errors produced by the freshmen of Philology Faculty in their writing assignments and find out what might cause the difficulty.
