The young professor (work) in his workshop in Boston It (be) a very hot afternoon in June, but the man didn’t notice. He was totally absorbed in his strange machine which he (work) on for about three years. Suddenly he (hear) a sound. The machine (be) the very first telephone and the young man (be) Alexander Bell.
Although he was only 28 years old at the time, Alexander(work) in the field of speech, anatomy, electricity and telegraphy for over 11 years. His grandfather (invent) a system to help people with speech problems. In fact, his whole family (involve) in the study of speech and sounds. Alexander’s father (write) also several books on how to speak correctly inventing a sign language called visible speech. At the age of 16 Alexander (start) to help teach deaf children. He (use) his father’s system and (achieve) amazing results. Unfortunately, two years later both his brothers (die) and the family (move) to Boston. In Boston he (continue) the work he(start) in Britain. He (become) so successful that he soon (open) his own school. However he was so busy that he(not have) time to work on his inventions. Then two years later he (agree) to give private lessons to a boy. This (give) Alexander the opportunity to continue his experiments with sound transmitters. He used to spend all his free time and most of his money, on his inventions. At that time he (have) another student who greatly (influence) his life. She was a young girl who (lose) her hearing and the ability to speak because of a childhood illness. Her name (be) Mabel and four years later they (get) married. Although many people (think) that the plan to invent a human voice transmitter was a waist of time, Alexander (refuse) to give up his dream. He (spend) so much time and energy on his inventions and (do) less and less work with his students so he soon (run out) of money. He was about to give up when he (meet) professor John Henry, an expert on the telegraph and electricity. Professor Henry (realise) immediately that Alexander(make)an amazing discovery and (encourage) him to continue with his experiments. In order to survive financially Bell(have) to work on the musical telegraph, but he also(continue) working on his mechanical voice transmitter. On the summer afternoon in 1875, when Alexander (hear) the first sound transmitted over his machine, he (realise) that he finally (achieve) his goal. Almost a year later in March 1876, the first words (hear) coming through the phone. On his 29th birthday Alexander Graham Bell (register) his invention with the patent office and, because they never (see) anything like it before, they (register) his invention as “an improvement in telegraphy.” The name “telephone” (come) later.
