PAST CONTINUOUS PAST SIMPLE
· an activity in progress around a specific time in the past: I was studying for my exams this time last year. – … готовился · events which happened in the past: I woke up early and got out of bed. – … проснулся … и встал
· a temporary situation in the past: Bill was using my office until I came back from America. – … пользовался · a regular or habitual activity in the past: She lived just outside London. –… жила

Exercise 1. Make the following sentences: a) negative; b) interrogative.

1. She was working on her report all Sunday. (Who? When?)

5. I was thinking about him. And wondering a lot, too. (Who…about?)

Exercise 2. Choose the correct tense in the following sentences.

1. I was not listening / did not listen, so I missed what the teacher said. 2. I work in a travel agency now. Before that I worked / was working in a shop. 3. She was passing / passed her examination from 6 to 7 yesterday. 4.My father taught / was teaching me driving when our cousin came. 5. Exercise 3. Join the sentences using as, when or while, as in the example.

Exercise 6. Choose the correct form of the verbs.

Exercise 7. Choose the correct form of the verbs.

TOMAS EDISON (1) started / was starting work on the railway when he was twelve, selling newspapers and snacks. Exercise 10. Choose the most suitable words underlined.

Exercise 11. Put each verb in brackets into a suitable tense. All sentences refer to past time. Suggest alternative tenses if necessary where the PAST PERECT or another tense might be possible.
