Adventurer

Ships often stay overnight in St. Petersburg, allowing guests to explore further afield. Why not 85 head to Moscow for a full day of sightseeing with a guide? After an hour-long flight and some driving, you land in Red Square. After seeing St. Basil's Cathedral with its multi-colored, onion- shaped domes, head underground to the Metro, where you may be surprised to see the stations decorated with mosaics, crystal chandeliers, marble columns and walls. Tour the Kremlin's Armory Chamber, which houses the royal crowns, jewelry and some of the beautiful Fabergé 90 eggs. Most tours end with dinner, capped by a shot of vodka, to toast your visit before your flight back.

Entertain Me

St. Petersburg has long been considered one of the world's major art centers. Take in a ballet, concert, or any other performance in one of the city's theatres. A night at the ballet is almost 95 universally offered on cruise ship itineraries, usually at the Hermitage Theater or the Alexandrinsky Theater. You may see dancers from the renowned St. Petersburg Ballet perform a full-length ballet or a selection of classic scenes.

Be sure to ask for the "vodka sommelier" when ordering from the extensive vodka menu at The Caviar Bar, Grand Europe Hotel. The classy, 138-year-old, Art Nouveau landmark in the heart of 100 St Petersburg is the place to indulge in Russian caviar and vodka. Russian Standard Vodka is one of the most popular brands in the country; if you like it, pick some up to take home.

Family

A popular family excursion is a trip to Peterhof Palace, often called Russia's Versailles, to check out the 300-acre Lower Park's elaborate system of 174 fountains. Kids especially love the several 105 trick fountains designed by Peter the Great himself and the miniature excursion train that takes you across the park. During your tour, you'll see the Marine Canal, the Monplaisir Palace and Monplaisir Garden with its statues, including Sampson Tearing Open the Jaws of the Lion, as well as the Sun Fountain and the Roman Fountain.

If the kids aren't interested in a night at the ballet, take them to a folkloric show of traditionally 110 attired singers and dancers. Highlighting Russia's various regions, the performers stage the lively dances of Don Cossacks and sing melodic Russian, Ukrainian and Gypsy songs. Many cruise ships offer this option. With 'tweens and teens, pay a visit to The Hermitage, second in size only to the Louvre, to take in the renowned art collection displayed in the Winter Palace.

Foodie

115 Many tours and excursions include lunch or dinner at a traditional Russian restaurant. Make sure to sample borscht, a beetroot soup; beef stroganoff, comprised of thin slices of beef braised with mushrooms, onions and sour cream; or chicken Kiev, chicken breasts wrapped around garlic butter, usually breaded and sautéed. Caviar is also a notable dish, served with chopped hard-boiled egg and onion on blinis (miniature pancakes). Caviar is a great souvenir to take 120 home, too, and you can pick some up at various shops. Sample more than 100 types of vodka at Russkaya Ryumochnaya No. 1, connected to the Museum of Russian Vodka to see if you can settle on a favorite.
