Reflective Practice
According to Bolton (2005) reflective practice is positioned firmly as a dynamic developmental process (…) It is a creative adventure right through the glass to the other side of the silvering. Such reflective practice can take us out of our own narrow range of experience and help us to perceive experiences from a range of viewpoints and potential scenarios.
Reflective practice writing is a way of expressing and exploring our own and other’s stories: crafting and shaping to aid understanding and development.
(Gillian Bolton, Reflective Practice, Writing and Professional Development, Second Edition, Sage, 2005)
English (2009) explains that design students need to reflect on their effectiveness and development in order of progressing their study.
Practitioners are challenged to produce personal reflective practice process model that will rely on literature that they have red and their comprehending of action research principles and to apply it utilizing a recording template into their research process.

Interpretation and Application
As a first step, to develop progress of the team’s work thepractitioners created a reflecting practice models. In collaboration with the team, plan of each meeting was produced and areas of the research for each member were identified.
Recording template
Group meeting 1 (27/01/2014)
Plan:
1. Research about topics related to Lakeland;
2. Research about kitchen – related things;
Observation & Reflection:
At first the group decided to research about Lakeland to get an impression about this company and to “feel its spirit”.
The team’s first impression was that it seemed almost impossible to come up with any new product ideas because all that may be required at the kitchen were already among Lakeland items. But despite this feeling the team made a decision to go to the Lakeland store and to try to analyse the situation again.
The team’s next decision was to find information about different thing related to kitchen and some cooking trends to identify an area where the team’s future product will belong. But after very informative and helpful conversation with the tutor the team members understood that the group needs to find an alternative point of view to look at the project on the different angle, to think “out of the box” and try to present something really innovative to the Lakeland at the end of the semester.
The team decided to go with Global Challenges because they represent current reality and difficulties that the society has in the modern world.
From the list of different challenges that was given to the team by the tutor “Status of women” was chosen. Mostly the decision was based on the fact that the team consists of girls only so the team members will be able to fully emphasize the topic.
This problem is connected to the project because a lot of people still consider a kitchen as more women space than men space. The team wanted to change this situation that’s why members decided to concentrate on a problem of women domination at the kitchen.
None of the team members is married yet but when they will be they will not want to spend all of their free time in front of the cooker, especially after a hard long day that was spent at work.
The first meeting could be more efficient if the team members have took their time with the research and divided different topics between each other instead of researching about everything at the same time. Language barrier and frequent misunderstandings also became a little obstacle for the team’s work because the group’s members did not know each other well and it was a little bit hard to understand each other.
Group meeting 2 (27/01/2014)
Plan:
1. Go to the Lakeland store;
2. Try to identify a market gap;
3. Try to find a part of an answer to the question “Why do not men cook?”;
4. Discuss derived results;
Observation & Reflection:
After the team members returned from the Lakeland store they have discussed their impressions and came to a conclusion that there are not so many items that can attract men and most of utensils are probably too feminine for guys. For example those items that have flower pattern, were painted with a pink colour or were made in a heart or flower shape. Some guys may feel ashamed even to touch that kind of stuff and will think something like “I will not use this, it will turn me into a woman!”
So, the team members came up with the idea that their product should be attractive to guys to draw their attention.
The team had different suggestions about the future product:
– It could be something with a “boyish” shape (cars, balls, robots, rockets, motorbikes…) because a lot of guys do not actually grow up and still feel like a little boy, in their soul, who wants to play;
– It could be something related to technologies;
– It could make cooking process easier and faster;
The team members did not experience almost any problems with communication during their second meeting because they have spent some time together outside of the classroom and had an opportunity to get used to each other characteristics. But after the meeting the team member’s thought that it could be better if they were taking notes at the time of their work.
Group meeting 3 (11/02/2015)
Plan:
1. To create and describe in details future experiments that the team is going to carry out;
Observation & Reflection:
Experiment №1: Guys and hygiene. Aim: to ask guys about their hygiene process at the kitchen. How clean do they maintain their kitchen?
Experiment №2: Guys in Lakeland. Aim: to go to the Lakeland store and observe which equipment attracts more guys and which items seem interesting for them. Take pictures/shoot videos/ask questions.
Experiment №3: Girls vs Boys/Time’s out. Aim: guys and girls coking the same dish and comparing the way of how they prepare/wash/cut/cook things and who can do it faster/better. Competitive element can make the experiment more fascinating for participants.
The team members have not had any problems during the discussion and planning phase of their future experiments.
Group meeting 4 (13/02/2015)
Plan:
1. Discuss feedback derived at the tutorial;
2. Create a survey;
1. During the tutorial the team members were told to consider in their progressing work a certain lifestyle details about their future customers. Like girlfriend’s presence in consumer’s life, an opportunity that they might like to cook together; how much time they may spend in the kitchen.
The team was recommended to create a several personas that will represent different lifestyles, generations, family status and maybe even different nationalities.
Also the team was suggested to read different literature and articles about men’s behaviour in diverse cultures.
2. To create better understanding of the team’s future customer’s need the group decided to make a survey of following questions:
1) Is it traditional for your country that a kitchen is more women space than man space?
2) Do you like this situation?
3) Do you cook? a) If yes: do you enjoy it? b) If sometimes: what can encourage you to cook more? c) If no: what is preventing you from doing it? What do you think can encourage you to start?
4) Which part of a cooking process is the most interesting for you? / Which part (in your opinion) can be the most interesting (if you don't cook)?
5) If there were special products for men can it make the process of food preparation more attractive (if you do not cook) / more fascinating (if you do cook)?
6) Which things represent masculinity the most, in your opinion?
7) How much time do you spend in the kitchen each day?
8) If you do cook, what do you prefer – to cook only for yourself or for your loved ones?
9) Would you like to take alcohol while eating?
10) What kind of problems do you face in terms of partying?
11) What kind of flavours do you like in cakes or breads?
Group meeting 5 (14/02/2015)
Plan:
1. To create personas;
2. To carry out an experiment (Experiment №1: Guys and hygiene);
Observation & Reflection:
1. To address their project the team decided to create two personas.
Jason
35 years old, married with three kids. He lives in a small private house in the outskirts of London. Jason works as a manager in a big company, his hobby is to go camping with friends and family. Jason has two old cars and enjoys to spend time at his garage each weekend.
David
22 years old, university student (BA Design) who lives in an arranged apartment with his girlfriend. David works in a restaurant as a waiter. He likes to cook for his girlfriend sometimes, or to cook with her.
Through creating personas team wanted to better understand and emphasize future customers.
2. Experiment №1: Guys and hygiene.
During the first experiment most of the team member’s classmates were asked different questions about hygiene and their attitude towards it.
The team members have not got any problems while they were creating personas. But carrying out an experiment was slightly more difficult because of the language barrier between the team members, who were already accustomed to each other accents and speaking habits, and their classmates. But during the experiment all difficulties and misunderstandings were successfully solved.
Group meeting???/03/2015)
The team members were very dissatisfied with their product ideas after the Interim presentation’s feedback that feeling pushed them to the decision that the ideas should be significantly changed.
Reflection
The recording template was a very useful thinking tool for the team’s work. At the beginning each member started to use the recording template after group’s meetings, but they quickly understood that it is much more efficient to make it during group sessions because sometimes they could not remember each meeting in details and it slows down the team member’s reflective practice process.

Interpretation and Application
To better understand future customers, to develop team work and to feel team spirit the group members decided to carry out three experiments.
Experiment №1. “Guys and hygiene”
The aim of the first experiment was to ask guys from the team’s class about their hygiene process at the kitchen to understand how clean do they maintain their kitchen and what is their attitude towards cleaning process.
Ethical implications: the team members need to make sure that participants are okay with questions, so maybe it will be useful to show them questions before asking them;
Participants: most of the guys from the class (they will answer the questions more willingly than strangers);
Plan of the experiment:
· Prepare questions for the interview;
· Show the questions to participants and ask them if they want to take part in the interview;
· Ask questions/take pictures/notes/shoot videos during the experiment;
· Discuss and analyse derived result;
The team members divided roles among them: one member took pictures, one shoot video, one will take notes and the last one will ask questions. Thus each of the team members will be able to concentrate on her own task. After each experiment team will discuss derived data and check it.
After completing the experiment the team got an impression that most of guys hated the whole cleaning process. Some of them did not do dishes and other cleaning procedures very frequently, some of them did not do it at all. Most of guys neglected hygiene in terms of cooking.
Experiment №2. “Guys in Lakeland”
The aim of the second experiment was to go to the Lakeland store and observe which equipment attracts more guys and which items seem more interesting for them.
Participants: guys from age group of 20-40 (to understand tastes of the target group);
Plan of the experiment:
· Go to the Lakeland store;
· Ask stuff members if we can take pictures/shoot videos inside the store;
· Ask guys/men if we can take pictures/shoot videos of them;
· Take the interview if the guy/man is interested;
· Discuss and analyse derived result;
ethical implications:
a) the team members need to ask stuff members and customers at the Lakeland store if they are okay with us taking pictures/shooting videos of them;
b) questions should be very correct and not offensive to any of the participants;
Staff didn't allow the team members to take pictures of the store’s clients, or to ask them if we can take pictures. So members took pictures of the team with products that were interesting to male customers the most. There were very few male clients in Lakeland and almost all of them were people in years what convinced the group that their idea to attract more men from the age group of 20-40 years was right.
Experiment №3. “Girls vs Boys / Time’s out”
The aim of the third experiment was to make one guy and one girl to cook the same dish using same ingredients and compare the way of how they prepare, wash, cut, cook things and who can do it faster and better. Competitive element can make the experiment more fascinating for participants.
Participants: one girl from the team and one guy from the class (to understand the way guys behave in the kitchen);
Plan of the experiment:
· Find a guy who will agree to take part in the competition;
· Find a recipe that will be used in the experiment;
· Go to a supermarket to buy required ingredients (same for both competitors);
· Ask both competitors to cook a dish;
· Use a seconds counter to note the time of the experiment and to determine the fastest competitor;
· Take pictures/notes/shoot videos during the experiment;
· Compare the time and the way of their cooking;
· Discuss and analyse derived result;
Ethical implications & health and safety considerations:
– the team members need to be aware of where fire extinguishers are available and learn how to use them also need to have fire blanket near the oven;
– the team members should wash boards, equipment, containers, hands before/after cooking (some food need to be washed also);
– the team members should be careful with knives and hot oil (if they will use it);
– the team members need to make sure that any of the ingredients (for example, if someone is vegetarian) that will be used (or the dish itself) will not offend any of the participants (their religion and ideology should be considered).
Reflection
Collaboration of the team members who came from diverse background and different countries such as China, India and Russia was very useful in terms of team work and also self-education and expanding each member’s view of the world, because they were able to share their experiences and knowledge from varied perspectives and viewpoints through the prism of the team member’s cultures. They were able to learn about traditions and habits that are conventional for the team member’s homelands.
The team members have learned how to communicate with people whose ways of thinking did not match their own, how to work together with people who do not speak the same language with them. How to treat colleagues in a respectful way and how not to make an impression of them relying on stereotypes about the country where they came from.
