Ukraine is a very young country. It got its independence only in 1991. (I was born in 1991, so my age and the age of my Motherland are the same). But at the same time the history of my country dates back ad far as some thousand years. We all know about the Trypillya Culture. Trypillya is near Ukrainka not far from Kyiv. On these lands the remains of the oldest towns of Europe were found. During its history Ukraine was often divided into some parts. Foreign rulers came and owned these lands. Ukraine reunited almost all the historical Ukrainian lands only during the Soviet times. On the 16th of July, 1990, Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine and one year later on the 24th of August, 1991, Ukraine became an independent state. Ukraine has a democratic political system. It means that the state power in Ukraine does not belong to one person. It is devided into 3 branches: legislative, executive and judicial. Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian Parliament represents the legislative branch. The head of state is the President. The judicial power in Ukraine is represented by the Courts. The highest Courts in Ukraine are the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court.
On the 28th of June, 1996, Verchovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Constitution of Ukraine. Present Constitution was adopted at a dramatic overnight parliamentary session of June 27 - June 28, 1996, semi-officially known as "the constitutional night of 1996". The results of the parliamentary vote were announced on June 28, 1996, at about 9 a.m. Kiev time.
The adoption of a new constitution of Ukraine became an important event in the life of the people of Ukraine. Our country has long-standing constitutional traditions. The first Constitution of Ukraine was written by hetman Philip Orlyk in 1710. Being the first constitution in Europe it was notable for its profound democracy.
The Constitution is the Fundamental Law of the country. According to the Constitution the power in Ukraine belongs to people. It is exercised through democratic elections and referendums and by state government bodies and self-government institutions. The form of state government is a republic. The head of state is the president. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is the highest legislative body in the country. All citizens have equal rights. People are proclaimed to be the greatest social value in Ukraine.
The Constitution guarantees the rights freedoms and duties of the citizens. According to the Constitution the citizens have the right to work, education, health protection, etc. there are no privileges or restrictions based on colour of skin, beliefs, etc. The state language is Ukrainian. The State Symbols are the State Flag, the State Emblem and the State Anthem.
The Constitution of Ukraine has 161 article, 15 chapters and preamble.
