The United States of America is one of the largest countries in the world. It is a very powerful and highly developed country. The USA is situated in central North America, with Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The two newest states are Alaska and Hawaii. The total area of the USA is 9.372.614 square kilometers. Alaska is the largest of America’s 50 states. The population of the country is over 260 million people. A flight from New York to San Francisco takes five and a half hours. Airlines serve 834 cities throughout the country. A coast-to-coast trip by train takes three days. A trip by automobile from coast-to-coast takes five to six days. The USA is also a land of beautiful rivers and lakes. The state Minnesota, for example, is known as the land of 10.000 lakes. The Mississippi is one of the world’s greatest rivers. The largest lakes of the USA lie on the border with Canada. One of the world’s wonders, the Niagara Falls, is on the Niagara River between Lakes Eire and Ontario. The capital of the USA is Washington D.C. Among other big cities are New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago.
What is interesting in the capital of the USA that it is really difficult to lose your way there. Streets running north and south have numbers for names and streets running east and west have letters for their names. So, you can always guess what part of the city you are.
Washington D.C. is a young city. Government moved there only in 1800. You can not find high buildings in D.C., because there is a law that no private building has to be higher than White House (40 meters high). There is a monument to T. Shevchenko in Washington D.C. It is almost in the centre of the city about 30 minutes walk from White House.
Washington is named for the first president of the USA, George Washington. The D.C. in the city’s name stands for Christopher Columbus.
Washington D.C stands on the banks of the Potomac River and it was built on muddy land that is why the air in the city is very humid. It is supposed to be the second most humid place among big cities in the USA after New Orlean.
There are a lot of beautiful green parks and nice buildings in the capital. The Capitol, White House, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial are the most famous. The Capitol is the seat of the government and the Congress of the USA. High above Congress there is the Statue of Freedom. Near all the Presidents were inaugurated in this building. The famous and very rich The Library of Congress is situated here.
White House is a residence of the President of the USA. He lives and works there.
26.Why do we study English?
There are many reasons why we study English.
This language is very popular. It is spoken all over the world. It is spoken as a native language in the UK, the USA, New Zeeland, Canada, Australia etc. If you go somewhere abroad and speak English almost everybody will understand you. It is the language of business. So you can speak with foreign partners without interpretor. Around 60% of information in Internet is in English. You can use computer without any problems if you know English.
“So many languages you know so many times you are a man”. That’s why all clever and famous people are polyglots. When you learn foreign languages - you learn the culture of foreigners as well. You learn many things about their history and traditions. You do not learn only to speak but you also learn to understand those people.
English is the most popular foreign language in Ukraine. A lot of people learn English. As I know English is spoken as the native or the second language in about 50 countries. It is learnt in many other countries, so, if you go abroad it is easy to find people speaking English. You will always be able to communicate if you know English.
I hope my country will join the European Union in future. Even now there are a lot of foreign companies working in Ukraine. They do their business in Ukraine but their offices are in different countries. So, English is their working language and all documents are in English as well. If you want to have a good job you need to know English and computer.
As for computer, to use it effectively you need to know English too. There are many programs translated into our native language but the newest ones almost always appear in English. More than half information in Internet is in English. You can find a lot of new people in Internet. People from different countries enter Internet every day. They search it looking for goods, news or just try to relax visiting different sites. If you know English you can join a group by interests or even find a pen pal in Internet. If you have a fast internet connection you can even organize video calls. Internet is, I think, the greatest source of information, and most of this information is in English. If you know English you can read English books in the original. The translations are always worse than the original books.
I began to study English, when I was a little boy. It was in a kindergarten. But it was like a game. I began to study it more seriously, when I was in the third form. Since that time I had many different teachers of English. I had many extra classes. Sometimes I spoke with native speakers. And I think it is a great practice.
