Ufa State Petroleum Technological University is one of the major centers for training oil engineers in our country. It was founded in October 1948 as Ufa Oil Institute and was granted the status of the University in 1994. The students’ body and the teaching staff are increasing from year to year. The basic idea of education is the unity of academic, practical and research work. Characteristic features of teaching are as follows: first, theory must be combined with practice; second, great attention is paid to the quality of studying; third, students must be self-reliant and they must know how to educate themselves. Besides teaching the university staff does a great deal of research. Students are also trained for research work and in the higher classes many of them begin to do independent research.
The University provides full-time, part-time and extra-mural tuition. Full-time students have a five year course of studies, part-time and extra-mural students study six years. In the final year all students must write a thesis based on the work done in their speciality.
Currently the University trains about 14,000 students in eight faculties: Oil and Gas Mining, Pipeline Transportation, Economics, Automation of Production, Mechanical, Architectural and Building Engineering, Chemical Technology and Biotechnology, Humanities. The University has a postgraduate course and 7 academic boards for thesis defense. Since 1985 Ufa State Petroleum Technological University began teaching international students.
The academic year is divided into two terms. At the end of each term students take their tests and examinations. One foreign language is compulsory for all students.
The University is in close connection with oil and gas industry and students have practical training at oil and gas fields, pipeline construction sites, oil refineries and other industrial enterprises of our country. After graduation some of the best students are selected to remain for 3 years more to do post-graduate work while the rest are assigned to jobs at pipeline construction sites, oil refineries, oil fields, research institutes and other places.
The Chairs and laboratories of the University are located in 8 buildings. Laboratories are equipped with modern facilities and the computing center processes the results of the entrance exams, calculations for the semester and diploma projects. Virtually every Chair has computer classes. The University has a scientific technical library and reading halls. There are more than one million volumes of books and journals there.
The University provides favorable conditions for the students’ studies and recreation. Our University is a world of its own. It has its own rules and traditions, legends and true stories, its own stars and idols. There are student clubs, reading halls, halls for diploma and course projects, gyms in every dormitory. Annually more than 1,000 people go to the sport camp «SOLUNI».
The sport complex of the University includes a stadium with tracks, soccer field, a complex of sport courts, four gyms, a ski camp, a shooting gallery and a bicycle camp. Students participate in numerous sections of 25 available sports.

The Republic of Bashkortostan – a sovereign republic within the Russian Federation – was proclaimed on October 11, 1990.
Bashkortostan is located along the South Urals and the adjacent plains, just in the border between Europe and Asia. It occupies the territory of 143600 square kilometers. The Republic numbers 20 cities, the largest being Ufa, Sterlitamak, Salavat, Neftekamsk, Oktyabrskiy.
The capital city of Bashkortostan is Ufa, a beautiful city on the river Belaya bank accounting more than one million people.
The population of Bashkortostan is over four million people. About a hundred nationalities inhabit Bashkortostan: Bashkirs, Russians, Tatars, Chuvashes, Maris, Ukrainians, Germans, etc.
The nature of Bashkortostan is very beautiful. Boundless steppe here lies near impassable taiga, mountain ranges rise over extensive plains. There are about 600 rivers and thousand lakes in the republic. It is characterized by the continental type of climate. Winter is cold here and it is usually hot in summer.
The supreme body of the legislative and representative branches is the State Assembly – Kurultai. The highest executive organ is the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Bashkortostan.
Bashkortostan of today is one of the few regions of Russia developing without being subsidized from the federal centre. Moreover, the Republic participates in financing certain federal programs.
Rich deposits of oil, gas, coal, copper, zink and other ores discovered in the republic made possible a rapid industrial growth. The main branches of industry are extraction and processing of oil, fuel and energetic industries, machine-tool building, production of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, coal mining. Oil extraction has lead to the development of refining and chemical industries.
Bashkortostan is also an important agricultural region of our country, one of the major suppliers of grain, potatoes, flax, milk, meat and other other products. As to the total value of agricultural production, the republic takes 6th place in the federation and the first place in the Ural region.
The powerful economic potential of the Republic of Bashkortostan contributes to a successful development the Republic’s foreign economic activities. Good contacts have been established with embassies and trade representations of West and East European countries, of the USA, India, Turkey, Japan, Thailand, Australia and the Arab countries.
The present Bashkortostan belongs to Russia’s largest industrial centers specializing in raw materials extraction and processing, semi-finished goods production and export to other regions.
