Surprise in the Post Office

Mrs Smith: What does it say?

Mrs Jones: It says: This parcel contains six mice.

Mrs Smith: Pooh!

Mrs Jones: Listen! What’s in this sack?

Mrs Smith: It’s making a strange hissing noise.

Sack: (hisses) Sssssssssssssssss!

Mrs Jones: Mrs Smith! It’s a sack of snakes!

Mrs Smith: So it is! And what’s in this box, Mrs Jones?

Mrs Jones: It’s making a buzzing sound.

Box: (buzzes) Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Mrs Smith: These are bees!

Mrs Smith: A parcel of mice! And a sack of snakes! And a box of bees! This is very surprising.

Mrs Jones: It’s amazing. This isn’t a post office, Mrs Jones. It’s a zoo!

 

Exercise 8. Pronounce this tongue-twister in the shortest possible time:

Zizzi’s zippy zipper zips.

Exercise 9. Give the Russian equivalents of the proverbs. Learn them. Think of situations to use these proverbs:

1. Easy does it.

2. As sure as eggs is eggs.

3. Everybody’s business is nobody’s business.

4. Asses as well as pictures have ears.

5. One man’s meat is another man’s poison.

6. A man is judged by his foes as well as by his friends.

7. Deeds not words.

Exercise 10. Read the text. Mind the sounds [s] and [ z ]:

Temperatures are expected to fall to minus six degrees in the south. Northern areas will have severe frost, with snow on the hills. It may also snow near the south cost. Roads will be icy – drive slowly, and don’t get too close to the other cars. Watch out for patches of freezing fog. Don’t drive too fast – it’s dangerous in these conditions.

 

Unit 8. The Sound [θ]

The sound [θ]occurs in word initial, word medial and word final positions. [θ] is spelt «th» as in thought, nothing, hearth. Definition. [θ] is constrictive fricative, forelingual, interdental, strong and voiceless. Articulation. 1. The tip of the tongue is either close to the edge of the upper teeth or slightly projected between the teeth. 2. For [θ] the vocal cords do not vibrate. 3. The air force is very strong for [θ].
