2. George: Hello. I would like to know if you could repair my portable television set. It isn't working properly.

Repairman: What seems to be the problem?

George: I was trying to tune in the sports channel yesterday and the entire screen went blank when I touched this button. ( He points to a button on the TV.)

Repairman: Have you used that knob before?

George: Yes, I use it often when I am trying to tune in different channels. I think it is the knob for adjusting the tuning, isn't it?

Repairman: From the looks of it, yes, you're right. But I will have to take off the back cover to see what the trouble is and see if it is adjusting to the tuning.

George: How long will that take?

Repairman: Only a few minutes. Then I should probably be able to give you an estimate about how much it will cost to repair.

George: Well then, go ahead. I don't know if it is worth to repair this old thing but let’s take a look.

Repairman: You can wait in the reception area and I will come out and tell you what I find in just a few minutes.

George: Fine. I'll be waiting in the reception area.

3. Repairman: Good afternoon. I work with Smith Television Repairs. You called our office yesterday about a problem with your television. Can I come in?

Nancy: Oh. Hi! It's great that you could get here the next day. The man I talked on the phone said it might be several days before someone could get here. Come in.

Repairman: Thanks. Where is your television set?

Nancy: It's in the next room, go in, please, and I will show you where it is.

Repairman: Tell me what is wrong, please.

Nancy: I don't know. It's an older model of television, may be it is just too old. Two days ago when I came home from work I tried to turn it on and it wouldn't work. I turned the knobs on the back of the television but it didn't help. It was dead.

Repairman: OK, let me take a look. I will have to take off the back coverand look at the inside, it will take a few minutes. If I can find out what is wrong, I will be able to give you an estimate about how much it will cost.

Nancy: That would be great.

(The repairman looks at the television and then speaks to Nancy.)

Repairman: I think you blew a socket because it is very old. Did you see smoke coming from the TV?

Nancy: No. It just stopped working, there was never any smoke or fire.

Repairman: Well. I think if I replace this socket it should work again. I think I have the parts with me and it shouldn't take more than an hour. The whole job should cost you about $75. Would you like me to do it?

Nancy: Yes, of course. It needs to be fixed so I guess you'd better get going.

Repairman: OK, I'll get started and call you when I am finished.

4. Tom: Good afternoon. Is this a repair shop for small appliances?

Repairman: Yes, this is Acme Repairs. What seems to be your problem?

Tom: I have a mixer here which isn't working. I was wondering if you could look at it and tell me if you could fix it.

Repairman: Sure. Can you tell me what happened? When was the last time you used it?

Tom: Two days ago. I was preparing a dinner for several friends and when I plugged in my mixer it blew up. The cord began to catch fire and there was smoke. I unplugged it immediately and didn't try to use it again.

Repairman: I see. Can I look at the mixer please? It doesn't sound too serious but I can take a quick look and let you know what the estimate will be.

Tom: Here it is, what do you think?

Repairman: It looks like the wires burnt up at the place where the cord and the plug join. It isn't serious but the entire mixer will have to be rewired. It could take several days of work and I will have to buy the necessary wires to replace.

Tom: Exactly how long will that take and how much will that cost?

Repairman: It could cost well over $100 because I charge $15 an hour for the labor. The parts are inexpensive so those are no problem. I could have the repair job done by the end of the week.

Tom: Wait a minute. I think I could buy a new mixer cheaper than you could fix this old one!

Repairman: You are probably right and I happen to have several new models of mixers right here. Would you like me to show them to you?

Tom: Sure, let's look at the ones you have. I might just throw this old thing away!

5. Helen: Hi. I'm glad you could come so quickly. I'm afraid there is something terribly wrong with my refrigerator. I came home and wanted to cook dinner. When I opened the door of the refrigerator something inside blew up and smoke came pouring out. I pulled the plug immediately, but it really scared me. It has been unplugged since then, and that was about three hours ago.

Repairman: It sounds like it could be a fuse, but I'll have to take a look. Can you show me where your refrigerator is?

Helen: Oh, sure, this way. When it started smoking it really had me frightened. When I unplugged it, it stopped smoking so then I called your shop. You got here really quickly. That was great.

Repairman: Yes, we try to be as prompt and reliable as possible. If you'll excuse me, I'll take a look. (He looks into the refrigerator)

(Several minutes later.)

Repairman: It looks like what I thought it might be. It seems as though your interior light bulb has burnt out and as a result it shorted some wires near the socket. The socket is what started burning and caused the smoke.

Helen: It sounds pretty serious. Can you fix it? Will it be expensive?

Repairman: I can certainly fix it, and I think I have all the necessary tools with me. I can give you an estimate of about $25 for the parts and as you were told over the phone when you called, there is a house call charge of $50, plus an hourly labor charge of $10 an hour. The entire repair will cost about $95, and I will have it working just like new.

Helen: I guess that sounds reasonable, and it is certainly cheaper than buying a new refrigerator. Go ahead and get started.

Repairman: Ok, it shouldn't take me more than two hours. When I finish, I'll let you know.
