The book is aimed at preparing trainees to function as professional and competent users of English, able to perform a wide range of tasks in and outside the classroom. This promotes written and oral fluency through the creative use of language, and facilitates practice of the basic skills in a naturally integrated way in a professionally relevant context. It also involves trainees in professionally-oriented, large-scale project work.
The book covers the following topics: “The Author and His/ Her Voice in Fiction”, “Teaching and Learning Styles”, “Teaching Materials”, “Cross-Cultural Studies”, “Diversity and Convergence in Contemporary World”, “Moral Values and Virtues among the Ukrainian, British and American People” and is provided with Supplement. It contains the active word list, the guideline on project work, the scheme of the stylistic analysis of fiction and some materials for autonomous learning (supplements).
The following syllabus can be suggested:

Thematic Block #4: The Language and Styles of Emotive Literature Texts (10 hrs)

Thematic Block #5: Virtues and Values among Ukrainian, British and American People (7 units/ 14 hrs)
Each unit consists of three sections: Reading and speaking, Vocabulary and grammar, Writing.
The units for conversational topics ‘Materials: Evaluation, Selection, Adaptation, Design’, ‘Diversity and Convergence in Contemporary World: Wedding Customs and Traditions in English-Speaking Countries and Ukraine’, ‘Diversity and Convergence in Contemporary World: Overcoming Stereotypes and Prejudices’, ‘Moral Values and Virtues among the Ukrainian, British and American People’ were compiled by O.Y.Korolyova, I.V.Nikityuk; ‘Teaching and Learning Styles’ – by O.I.Fedotova (Unit 1), T.V.Fomenko (Unit 2), G.D.Polschak (Unit 3), L.M.Pinkovska (Unit 3), M.Y.Voloshko (Unit 4); ‘Cross-Cultural Studies’ – by I.V.Sham, O.M.Ryzhykh.
Exercises based on the textbook for fifth year students by V.D.Arakin, S.N.Bronnikova, O.F.Afanasyeva and others «Практический курс английского языка для 5 курса» were compiled by O.Y.Korolyova, I.V.Nikityuk, G.D.Polschak, L.M.Pinkovska, the Pattern Stylistic Analyses of the extract from ‘The Passionate Year’ and ‘Up the Down Staircase’ are taken from the method-guide «Методические указания к лингвостилическому анализу английского текста на занятиях по аналитическому чтению. V курс» (Горловка, 1988) compiled by L.I.Serdyukova and V.G.Baikov.
Supplement 1 ‘The Active Word List’ was prepared by I.V.Nikityuk.
Supplement 2 ‘Guidelines on Projects as Formats of Independent Studies Activities’ was worked out by L.I.Serdyukova.
Supplements 3 on the stylistic analysis of fiction – by L.M.Pinkovska and L.I.Serdyukova.
