WBS and PBS

A Work Breakdown Structure is a project deliverables or phase oriented grouping of the full scope of work.

It can be used to confirm a common understanding of the full scope of the project. Any work not included in the WBS is not included in the project.

Two types: deliverable oriented or phase oriented

Deliverable oriented WBS

Phase oriented WBS

PBS

The Product Breakdown Structure identifies and defines all the products (deliverables) that the project has to produce. The product breakdown structure will show the scope broken down in a hierarchical manner and at its lowest level each product (deliverable) will be identified. It is an effective tool that details the physical components of a particular product or system under consideration.

Resource leveling is a process that project manager follows to schedule how each resource is allocated to activities in order to accomplish the work within the scheduled start and finish dates of an activity.

The main purpose is create a smoother distribution of resource usage and reduce over allocation.

The resource schedule needs to be leveled for two reasons

- To ensure that no resource is over allocated

- The PM may want the number of resources to follow a logical pattern (no wild fluctuations)

Strategies:

- utilizing available slack

- shifting the project finish date

- smoothing
