Text 4A. Krasnoturyinsk

Our town is named Krasnoturyinsk. It is a small industrial town on the banks of the river Turya, in the Northern Urals.

Krasnoturyinsk is one of the most wonderful towns in Sverdlovsk Region. We love our town and call it ‘a small Leningrad’. Our town was projected during the Great Patriotic War by the architects from Leningrad, that is why the central square of our town looks like the Palace Square in St. Petersburg (it is semicircular and formed by arched buildings of the town administration and Krasnoturyinsk industrial college). We also have a wonderful opportunity to observe the so called ‘white nights’ in summer. It is really a unique nature phenomenon!

Krasnoturyinsk has its Coat of arms, which was created on the 26th of December, 2003. On the blue-red shield there is a chipmunk and a winged arrow, a symbol of aluminum industry.

Krasnoturyinsk is situated on the Turya River, 426 km from Yekaterinburg and 2079 km from Moscow.

In our region we have long and severe winters with a lot of snow. Spring comes in early April, but often there is snow in May. Winter comes in October, but we are not upset about it and we sledge, ski and skate. Mountains, which are situated in the west, protect our town from strong wings. At the end of summer there comes the most exciting period a period of picking berries and mushrooms. There are a lot of berries here: cowberry, cranberry, bilberry, cloudberry, honeysuckle. So delicious! There are many conifers here: pines, firs, cedars, and larches.

The history of Krasnoturyinsk begins with the name of Maxim Mihailovich Pohodyashin, a rich merchant, who was the owner of works in Verhoturje. In 1758 he started building the first copper mines: Vasilevski, Frolovski, Suhodoiski, Olhovski. A small settlement Turinskie Rudniki appeared next to those mines.

In 1875 Alexander Auerbach being a manager of copper mines, built a railway, schools, orphanage, mining trade school. On the 27th of November, 1940, it was decided to build Bogoslovsky aluminum plant. On the 9th of May this plant produced the first aluminum.

On the 27th of November, 1944, the settlement got the name of Krasnoturyinsk, because of the river Turya and an adjective ‘krasny’, that is a nice town.

Krasnoturinsk was the birthplace of a number of famous people. Alexander Stepanovich Popov, the great inventor of the radio, was born and spent his childhood in Turinsky Rudniki. Now there is a museum in his honor. The first President of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Alexander Petrovich Karpinsky, was born here, too. Anatoly Konstantinovich Serov, a famous pilot, a hero of the Soviet Union, was born in Turinsky Rudniki. Here a famous medical scientist Nicolay Alexandrovich Mislavsky and Evgraff Stepanovich Fedorov, a well-known scientist in geology, lived and worked for many years. Several streets in our town were named after famous countrymen. We have Popov street, Karpinsky street, Mikov street, Aboimov street. Our town is divided into three parts. The old part of the town was founded in 1757. The new part of the town was founded in the war years. In the years of the tenth Five-Year Plan a new living district appeared on the right bank of the river Turya.

In 1945 our aluminum plant, the construction of which began in 1941, produced the first metal. It happened on the 9th of May.

Besides the aluminum plant, there are some other industrial enterprises in our town. Among them we can name a heat power station, a large construction trust, copper and iron mines, a furniture factory, and a number of others.

St. Alexander Nevski’s Chapel was built in 1870 in honor of serfdom abolition in Russia. In 2000 it was restored and now it is in action.

In 2000 St. John’s Church was built in the central square of Krasnoturyinsk as the symbol of unity of all generations.

A wooden building of St Maxim the Confessor’s Church was built in 1782, but in 1829 it was burnt. A brick Church was built in 1851; it was very beautiful and majestic. During the Soviet period the Church was turned into the cinema and only in 1995 it was returned to the Orthodox Church.

The Russian education system is well represented in our town by quite a number of different types of schools: many secondary schools, two vocational schools, the Industrial Technical College, a specialized art school, specialized music schools for children, a sport school for children, a children’s school for choreography, a specialized medical school, the brunch of Ural Federal University.

There are also some places, where you can go to have a good time. A widescreen cinema, many clubs, a Puppet theater, Palaces of Culture give people of our town some opportunities to solve the problem of their leisure.

Krasnoturyinsk already has its own history. There are some traditions connected with our country and our town. We love our town and try to do our best to make it more beautiful and prosperous!
