III. Skim through the 1st paragraph of the following text on looking after horses and decide which of the headings best describes the gist (the main idea) of the paragraph.

Think carefully before you rush out and buy that appealing little pony or that wonderful-looking horse. As anyone who has ever owned one of these animals will tell you, they are affectionate creatures that you become very attached to, but their upkeep is considerable. It’s not just a question of paying for their stabling and feed. If you are unlucky enough to have an animal that is prone to injuries, vets’ bills can become a major headache. Bear in mind that an operation on a horse can cost more than a similar operation on a human being. Bear in mind also that children can be enthusiastic in the beginning and quickly tired of the constant effort it takes to look after a horse.

TIP: Be careful not to choose headings just because they repeat words you find in the text. Just because they use the same word does not mean that they describe the gist of the paragraph.

A They are not worth the expense D A serious commitment

B Choose your horse carefully E Medical bills can be high

C Don’t buy a horse

IV. Skim through the next two paragraphs from the same text. Choose the most suitable heading from the list A-D each time.

Horses and ponies are large animals that require regular exercise. If they don’t get the exercise they need, they become stressed and difficult to handle. This means that you need plenty of space to exercise them in. If you are lucky enough to own land that is large enough to keep an animal on, you should take expert advice before you set about building the stable where it will live. Even if you have the space, you might still be better advised to keep your horse in a professionally-run stable. Your children can learn to ride there and, later, to jump. You should also be aware that if you want your children to have part in competitions, you will need a horsebox to transport the animal in.

A Having the right facilities C Avoiding the right facilities

B Exercising the horse D Getting professional help with your horse

A horse or a pony should be kept in warm and clean conditions. It should also be examined regularly by a vet and vaccinated against a number of diseases that horses are prone to. Small injuries should be treated immediately before they develop into major problems. And don’t forget that a horse needs a carefully-balanced diet, if you want to have a healthy animal. It also requires regular grooming to keep its coat looking shiny and healthy.

A The right equipment C The right conditions

B The right care D The right medical care
