14. Share your opinion on the following statements:

1. The Young Scientists’ Network was started by and for recent PhDs who were frustrated by their job searches.

2. Historically, physicists have been employed in a remarkable array of different careers throughout the economy.

3. Recruiting for professorships occurs on an international level.

4. The unemployment rate and the time to find a position are two common indicators of the general health of the job market.

5. If the economy is being driven to a large extent by technology, why are the physics fields losing students?

13. Sum up what you have learned about the physics job market.

14. Make up questions to the following answers:

Much of the growth has been in industry, and physicists are increasingly being lured into a variety of fields including software and consulting.

The number of physics PhDs awarded each year continues to decline, especially among US citizens.

In a few select areas it is impossible to find any candidates.

What has changed is the significant increase in the number of opportunities in these fields?

Additional evidence of the vitality of the job market for physicists can be seen in the opinions expressed by new physics PhDs about their initial employment.

Americans represent the minority of entering first-year students, only 47% in 1999-2000.

Medical physics, bio-informatics, and computational linguistics are just a few examples.

15. Imagine, you are to make a report on the following topics.

Academic job market.

Employment of new PhDs.

Postdoctoral appointments.

16. Translate at sight and answer the question: ”How do you personally view physics?”

Some students view physics as weakly connected peaces of information to be separately learned, whereas others view physics as a coherent web of ideas to be tied together. Some students equate learning physics with retaining formulas and problem-solving algorithms, while others think that learning involves relating fundamental concepts to problem-solving techniques. Some students believe learning consists primarily of absorbing information, while others view learning as building one’s own understanding.

UNIT 2

CAREERS FOR PHYSICISTS

Work in pairs. Discuss what evidence there is in the text for the following statements:

1. The employment picture for physicists has changed over the last ten years;

2. Colleges and universities need to better prepare students for a variety of careers;

3. “Physics is whatever physicists are doing”
