The statements below give information about the custom of distributing duties among the bride and bridegroom's helpers before, during and immediately after the weeding. Are these duties the same or different in Ukraine? Write S for "the same" or D for "different" in the box. If the custom of distributing the duties is different, write brief notes explaining the difference. The bridesmaids (are chosen by the bride from amongst her young relatives and friends, usually to the number of 2 or 4) 1) wear an outfit of the same material and pattern, chosen by the bride, to make a unique ensemble; 2) pay for their attire themselves (usually their parents provide them with money for the outfit); 3) follow in pairs behind the bride in the procession; 4) carry around the portions of the wedding cake at the reception, and offer them to the guests. The chief bridesmaid (the bride's eldest unmarried sister, another unmarried relative or her best unmarried friend) 1) chooses the bridesmaids' dresses; 2) rehearses bridesmaids in their duties; 3) helps dress the bride for her wedding (sometimes); 4) takes charge of the bride's bouquet during the service having passed her own bouquet to the nearest bridesmaid; 5) draws the bride's veil clear of her face; 6) signs the register as a witness of the marriage (if chosen by the bride and the bridegroom); 7) should be available to the bride during the reception, to smooth away any little worries or difficulties that may arise; 8) helps the bride into her "going away" outfit; 9) sees the bride to the "going away" car. The bride's mother 1) issues the invitations to the wedding guests both to the ceremony and to the reception afterwards; 2) arranges the hotel accommodation for her distant guests or puts some of them up in her own home; 3) announces the forthcoming wedding in the press; 4) gives advice in decorating the church; 5) takes responsibility for the wedding bouquet, buttonholes and corsages for the two mothers to match; 6) helps her daughter to dress; 7) orders the wedding cars to take the bride and her father, the bridesmaids and herself to the service, and also some more cars for all the wedding guests; 8) has to make or have made the wedding cake and arrange its delivery to the reception; 9) arranges the details of the reception, including the menu, table decoration, seating guests, etc.; 10) books the photographer; and 11) collects what is left of the wedding cake after the reception, and cuts and boxes portions to post to distant relatives and friends. The bride's father gives his daughter away at her wedding (arrives at the church with the bride after everyone else has gathered within and, at the proper time in the service, takes his daughter's hand and gives it to the clergyman in a gesture of giving her away); accompanies the bridegroom's mother into the vestry to see the final act of the marriage - the signing of the register; pays all the bills for the reception; may be called on by the best man, at the reception, to propose the toast to the "Bride and Bridegroom". The ushers (are chosen by the bridegroom from among his unmarried brothers and his own or his bride's friends) wear the similar dress (morning coats, grey trousers and a wedding tie, or dark lounge suits); have buttonholes in their coat lapels; as the guests appear, hand them 'Order of Service' sheets; conduct the guests to their seats in the church.
