Exercise 3. Put the verbs in brackets into either the simple past or the past continuous tense:

 

It (be) a fine afternoon, and the sun (shine). Two young men (walk) over the hills near the sea. They (talk) very seriously and (not to see) that they (get) near the edge of the cliffs. Suddenly Tom (cry) out and (fall) over the edge. Jack (look) over and (see) that Tom (hold) on to a piece of grass. He (bend) down and (try) to pull Tom up; while he (do) this he (shout) for help. A man (sit) on the grass below. When he (hear) Jack’s shout he (get) up and (run) to the bottom of the cliff. All this time, Tom (try) to find a hold for his feet. It (be) no use: he (begin) to lose his hold on the piece of grass. The man at the bottom (wait). When he (see) that Tom (fall) he (shout), “Don’t worry - just let go!” Tom (let) go. While he (fall) through the air his whole life (pass) through his mind. The man (hold) out his arms; luckily he (be) very strong and (catch) Tom.

 

 

Exercise 4. Put the verbs in brackets into either the past simple or the past perfect tense:

 

Yesterday some friends (come) to visit us. We (be) glad to see them, because we (not to see) them for several years. Everything (be) ready for an hour before they (arrive); my wife (be) busy all the morning and (make) a splendid meal for them. When I (open) the front door Henry (say) that his wife Mary (come) with him but his daughter (not to come) because she (break) her arm the day before. He (say) she (be) very sorry because she (want) to come very much. As soon as they (take) their hats and coats off, we all (sit) down in the sitting- room, and Mary and Henry (tell) us what they (do) since we last (see) them. Когда мы приехали в аэропорт, самолет как раз приземлялся. 10. Не успел я опустить трубку, как телефон вновь зазвонил. 11. Когда мы пришли, Петр уже час писал свой доклад и заканчивал вторую главу. 12. Он ничего не сказал и вышел из комнаты. 13. Мой брат сломал ногу, когда катался на лыжах на прошлой неделе. 14. Профессор Петров приехал в Нижний Новгород два года назад. 15. Я проснулся в два часа ночи и не мог заснуть до четырех. 16. В прошлом году завод выполнил план к концу ноября. 17. После того, как я рассказал ему все, что случилось со мной в его отсутствие, я понял, что он поможет мне. 18. Раньше они были хорошими друзьями, но в последнее время видятся редко. 19. Он взял письмо, положил его в конверт и написал на конверте адрес. 20. Когда мы вернулись, бабушка сказала, что ребенок спит уже два часа.

 

 

Exercise 6. Choose the correct tense, past simple or past continuous:

 

I met/was meeting and old business colleague of mine while I travelled/was travelling to New York for a conference. She noticed/was noticing me while I stood/was standing in the queue at the airport check-in desk. We decided to travel together, and while we waited/were waiting for the flight to leave, we realized/were realizing that we were going to the same conference and staying at the same hotel. We talked about old times, and while we had/were having lunch on the plane, she said/was saying that she was going to look for a new job. I didn’t think of it at the time, but later on when the plane came/was coming in to land, I suddenly remembered/was remembering that we had a vacancy for a lawyer. I told her about the terms and conditions, and later that evening, when we had/were having dinner, she accepted/was accepting the position.
