33. What ways of young children learning to foreign languages do you know?
There are many ways to teach English to children, but one of the most exciting and rewarding ways to do it is by using English games. English Games not only engage the children, but also teach through play – and most of the time the children don’t even know they are learning until the time comes to show their knowledge! It truly is possible (and almost necessary) to create a classroom where the students not only learn but also truly enjoy their time there.Incorporating English games into the classroom can build interest in the class, put language in an interesting and meaningful context, give students a break from the pressures of learning a new language while giving the break a purpose, teach real world skills and, most importantly, build the student/teacher bond.
Music is an amazing tool for teaching languages, especially to children. Good songs will bounce around in a learner's head long after their lesson is over. Young learners pick up vocabulary, grammatical structures, and the rhythm of the language simply by doing what they already love to do...singing.
Flashcards. When introducing vocabulary to young learners, it’s great to use real items that capture children’s attention. However, it’s not always possible or realistic for teachers to use real items in the classroom. Flashcards can be a nice way to introduce new vocabulary so that learners have a very clear understanding.
Paintings. Language and art can complement and assist each other. When a concept is not clear in its written form, the visual form can assist the learner to comprehend, and likewise, when the visual form is confusing and unclear, the written form can facilitate understanding. The experience the student has with art in the classroom has to be enjoyable for both the student and the teacher. If the atmosphere in the classroom is too serious or stressing it will not serve any useful purpose. In fact, if there had been any of even a slight chance of getting the student involved with art (even if superficially) it might disappear completely if not approached with care. I do not propose a deep study of art but to use art as a teaching tool in language development.
Teaching English through Comics contains a series of activities based on comic strips and cartoons. These activities may be used in class for various purposes, adding humor to your lessons and creating an environment that is conducive to learning. All the activities can be used as they are or may serve as springboard to your new ideas.
Video. Children really enjoy watching cartoons and TV for a variety of reasons. For one, they get exposure to natural language in a non-threatening setting. Secondly, video provide common ground to students of any international background. • story books with pictures, computer graphics, maps (e.g. treasure maps), chart, posters, board games, worksheets, puzzles, • listening to stories, poems and riddles, verbal instructions and explanations
