II. VOCABULARY

1. Learn word-combinations and phrases (p.136) and do exercises 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 (pp. 139-140).

2. Study the vocabulary notes (pp. 134-136) and translate the examples into Ukrainian.

3. Do exercises 13, 15, 16, 17, 18 (pp. 141-143).

4. a) Learn the following words and phrases. Then work in pairs. Take turns in covering the right and the left sides of the table to check up the knowledge of your functional vocabulary.

b. Read the text paying attention to the words in bold and grammatical peculiarities of the

text.

King was a brilliantly endowed actor. His parents were ambitious for their son’s future and in due time sent him to art school. King’s education involved great expenses, but his parents didn’t grudge money in their son’s behalf. On graduation from art school King worked at small theatres and aspired after knowledge, after innovations, for he was brimful of ideas. But his colleagues were conservative-minded people and King had to fight against heavy odds. Step by step he translated his ideas into life and soon surpassed his partners. He worked magic on the stage. He was reputed to be the best Othello.

King was given to celebrating his success at restaurants, on and off he drank a drop too much and gradually took to drinking. When he was drunk he exceeded not only speed limits and the limits of decency. Everybody was sure he was bound to lose his job. And he did lose his job.

King tried to give up drinking, but he was frustrated in this attempt and was under constant medical observation.

Now King was 60. He was constantly involved in debt and cut an exceedingly miserable figure. At that time the theatre where he had worked was going to observe a centenary of its foundation. The producer decided to invite King to play the part of Othello. And King agreed, in spite of his age and poor health. He even gave up drinking and attended all rehearsals.

The day of the performance came. When King was in his green room, the producer knocked at his door and what should he say but the news that the prima donna had broken her leg and a young actress would substitute for her. When he stepped on the stage, he saw her for the first time. On hearing her first line, he figured her out at once. Though she was acting without a single rehearsal she got her bearings at once. She was a good match for him and the audience gave them a storm of applause. King was elated, he was in the vein and during the intervals he shut himself in his room and drank. The play was coming to a close. He was Othello and here was his wife Desdemona who had betrayed him. His hands are on her throat. The spectators are watching the scene with bated breath. When they realized that he had killed the actress, they rushed to the exit in panic.

On the following day the morning papers carried the news that the famous actor Ray King in a fit of madness killed an actress during a performance.
c. Give Ukrainian equivalents of the following words and phrases.
